Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2019

Wow, there is a very impressive freshness here that defies the heat of this vintage. The 2017 Saffredi does not seem like a 2017 at all. Now celebrating its 30th birthday, Saffredi is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot...

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The 2017 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT is a remarkable red wine hailing from the iconic region of Tuscany, Italy. This proprietary blend showcases the expertise of Fattoria Le Pupille, a renowned producer known for their commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

In the glass, this wine exhibits a deep, rich red color that entices the senses. With a cork closure, it exudes an air of tradition and sophistication. The alcohol percentage of 14.5% indicates a wine with ample body and structure, promising a memorable tasting experience.

Upon first nosing, the aromas of the 2017 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi are intoxicating. The bouquet is filled with notes of black cherries, berries, and dark chocolate, creating an alluring and complex olfactory profile. These scents are seamlessly integrated, showcasing the meticulous blending of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot.

On the palate, this wine continues to impress. Its texture is velvety and layered, with a creamy mouthfeel that adds to its overall opulence. Silky tannins elegantly meld into the wine, enhancing its depth and providing a luxurious drinking experience. The flavors of blackberries, spice, and lightly roasted coffee dance on the tongue, creating a symphony of taste sensations.

The 2017 Saffredi defies the heat of its vintage, exhibiting a surprising freshness that is truly exceptional. Despite the hot and dry summer, the vineyard's proximity to the sea and the vineyard management team's careful attention allowed the fruit to ripen in a balanced manner. While production was down 25%, the result is a wine of remarkable quality, showcasing ripe fruit and dark concentration.
