TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2018

(97-99) Deep and shiny in color, tobacco leaf, cedar wood, pencil shavings and dark fruits appear with no effort at all. Full bodied, lively, vibrant and juicy fruits, this wine is long and intrepid with a strong tannic...

jamessuckling.com, January 2020

Extremely aromatic with currant, wild-herb and fresh-violet aromas. This is regal cabernet sauvignon at its finest. The palate has unwaveringly long and defined tannins that carry such fresh, piercingly pure, redcurrant...

The Wine Independent, September 2023

The 2017 Montrose is composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet in color, it skips out of the glass with bright, vibrant, and wonderfully pure notes of kirsch...

Decanter, April 2018

This has more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend this year, the highest level since 2006, because the Merlot didn't quite make it through the September rains unscathed. The wine is correspondingly powerful with a robust...

jebdunnuck.com, February 2020

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2023

The 2017 Montrose is one of the most compelling wines of the vintage. Wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, sweet berries, rose petals and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with...

Vinous, March 2020

(95+ points) The 2017 Montrose is a very pretty, polished wine that speaks much more to finesse than power. Expressive floral and spices notes add an attractive inner sweetness to a Montrose that in 2017 leans more into...

Wine Enthusiast, March 2020

A well-structured wine, this is rich in tannins and in density. The tannins show firmness, a dry edge that runs with the black-currant fruits to give a wine that will be well balanced and serious. Drink this powerful wine...

Wine Spectator, March 2020

This is well-built for the vintage, featuring a core of red and black currant fruit that is pure and focused, supported by a racy iron spine. Exhibits ample length, with bay leaf, lilac and warm stone notes peeking...

Chateau Montrose is situated five kilometers north of Pauillac in Saint-Estephe, on a very well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop which runs for over a kilometer along the Gironde estuary. The 95-hectare (234-acre) vineyard surrounds the chateau, the winery, and the outbuildings, planted to a mix of grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 60% of the vines, with parcels of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

Succeeding three generations of the Charmolue family, Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose in 2006. Acquiring a love of Montrose wines from their father, and keenly aware of the potential of its unique terroir, they decided to invest in their passion. Under their management, Montrose entered the 21st century with a spectacular reconstruction.

This great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estephe appellation. With rigorous selection in both the vineyard and the winery, Chateau Montrose is structured and tannic, yet possesses the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classe. With time, it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The best vintages of Montrose are exceptionally long-lived, with certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009) considered to be legendary. The blend is roughly equivalent to the vineyard plantings - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.

The 2017 Montrose is a Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed region of St Estephe in Bordeaux, France. This red wine is a true gem, showcasing the classic style and elegance that Montrose is known for. With a deep and shiny color, it exudes sophistication and allure from the moment it is poured into the glass.

On the nose, the 2017 Montrose offers a symphony of aromas that captivate the senses. Notes of creme de cassis, blueberries, and crushed violets dance together, creating a fragrant bouquet that is both enticing and alluring. As the wine opens up, underlying hints of tobacco, damp earth, and spice emerge, adding complexity and depth.

The palate of this wine is beautifully textured and balanced, with good acidity and building tannins. It reminds me of the 2012 vintage, with its classic style and ripe tannins. The vibrant and juicy fruits burst forth, accompanied by flavors of tobacco leaf, cedar wood, and pencil shavings. The tannins are perfectly polished, providing structure and ageability.

Renowned wine critic Jeff Leve praises this wine, scoring it an impressive 99 points. He describes it as full-bodied, lively, and vibrant, with a strong tannic backbone. The purity of fruit and the well-integrated structure make it a wine that can age for decades. Similarly, James Suckling awards it 97 points, lauding its regal Cabernet Sauvignon character and unwaveringly long and defined tannins.

The 2017 Montrose is a wine that speaks to finesse rather than power. It leans more into the red fruit spectrum, with expressive floral and spice notes. It has freshness and sophistication that are truly impressive. The Wine Advocate gives it 95 points, highlighting its velvety and seamless texture, vibrant fruit, and supple tannins.

This wine is a total winner, and I believe it has the potential to surpass even the highest expectations as it continues to evolve in the bottle. With its class and promise, the 2017 Montrose is a remarkable addition to any wine collection.
