Sage and pennyroyal combine with pit-inflected lemon and lime for a penetratingly pungent aromatic display. Along with the clarity, primary juiciness and mouthwatering salinity that characterized the corresponding “village-level” bottling, this adds crystalline stony as well as intriguingly smoky mineral nuances. A pithy sense of sheer concentration, along with textural firmness, pulls in a slightly austere direction, but the refreshing retention of bright primary juiciness – precisely what Muskateller so often lacks – more than adequately compensates. Franzen opined that the grapes for this – from a small parcel of the estate’s oldest Muskateller vines – bespoke his notion of “picture-perfect Muskateller, with cooling aromatics but also crunch and a promise of tension [Spannung],” adding that he thinks wine from Muskateller grapes needs a bit of residual sugar to show at its best, which explains why none of the Müller-Catoir 2017s from that grape hew to the “three grams or under” policy on residual sugar that the rest of their legally trocken wines of the vintage appear to have followed. -- David Schildknecht

Wonderful pink-grapefruit and muscat nose that bowls you over. So joyful and really rather subtle for a seriously aromatic grape variety. Very bright finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.
