But there is also a cooling suggestion of mint that carries over onto a glossy albeit pithily concentrated palate in which generous primary juiciness and luscious ripeness gain the upper hand. “Herrenletten is where this year’s village-level Haardter got its salinity from,” observed Franzen, and that element is indeed present here in spades, including its incorporation into subtly sweet, umami-rich raw scallop. The superbly sustained finish tugs at the salivary glands. Perhaps in part due to marginally higher alcohol, I find myself experiencing slightly less clarity or sheer exhilaration here than from this wine’s ostensibly lesser, village-level counterpart. It would be fascinating to chart their evolutions in parallel. -- David Schildknecht collapse

Erste Lage" is deep, intense and ripe on the elegant and spicy nose that pairs ripe fruit with crushed stone aromas. Full-bodied, ripe and lush on the palate, this is a generous, dry and textured Riesling with fine tannins on the salty finish. The wine is less pure and salty than the Bürgergarten but more sensual, if you want something between Bürgergarten and Mandelgarten. Tasted in Haardt, December 2019.- SR collapse
