A solid 2017 with a linear flow of fine tannins through the center of the wine providing structure and backbone that gives the wine lovely energy. Lots of blackberries, ripe strawberries and blue fruit. Long and vivid. Drink after 2024.

The Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo bares the signature of Enrico Scavino on the front label as witness to the generational change at this estate, and countless others across the Langhe, that push forward through time thanks to a continual ownership handoff that goes from father to son. The Scavino family makes this appealing Barolo classico with fruit from seven different cru vineyards in the communes of Castiglione Falletto, Barolo and Serralunga d’Alba. It balances juicy flavors of crushed cherry and raspberry with earthy hints and warm spice notes. Its thick, chewy tannins will soften with time, but this is very appealing right out of the gate.

Sourced from seven vineyard sites, each fermented separately, and aged for 10 months in neutral French oak followed by one year in large cask, the 2017 Barolo is floral with orange blossom, clove, white pepper, and candied cherry. The palate is gentle and inviting, with notes of cranberry cocktail, rosewater, and stony earth. Approachable for fresh, early drinking, enjoy 2021-2032.

An expression of bright cherry, plum and licorice marks this supple red. Fleshy and balanced, with a line of firm, chalky tannins girding the tar- and eucalyptus-tinged finish. Should be enjoyable soon. Best from 2023 through 2035. — BS
