(WA 95-97 points) Vincent Paris's crowning achievement in 2017 is his 2017 Cornas la Geynale, which comes from 100-year-old vines on a parcel that faces due south. This is wild and woolly, boasting a wild ride of cracked pepper, blueberries, espresso and floral-herbal notes. Full-bodied and creamy-supple in texture on the mid-palate, it firms up on the long, long finish, ending with dusty tannins and plenty of grip. - Joe Czerwinski

Le Geynale is the producer's flagship Cornas sourced from top vineyard sites and old vines. Black-cherry and plum flavors are dense and potent but nuanced by violet perfume and layers of iron, graphite and dried herb. Ripe, integrated tannins are appealing already but this massively complex wine begs further cellar age. It should reward drinking through 2040, likely further.

(JD 94-96 points) The 2017 Cornas Geynale is the only wine in the lineup to not be destemmed and it comes all from the La Geynale lieu-dit. Deep saturated purple-colored, with beautiful notes of blackcurrants, smoked herbs, earth, pepper, and tons of meatiness, it's certainly the most classic in style, as well as structured and tannic. Give this full-bodied beauty 2-4 years of bottle age and it's going to drink nicely for 10-15 years or more. It's an awesome wine for the true Cornas lovers out there.

Vincent Paris' whole range of Cornas wines are noticeably richer and riper this year. His La Geynale is a south-facing vineyard of Syrah vines of over 100 years of age grown on granite. It's 100% whole-bunch fermented with indigenous yeasts, then matured for 16 months in oak barrels of two to eight years of age. It's full, rich, sweetly-fruited and jam-packed full of rich blackberry juice and damson. The herbal skein helps to bring freshness and complexity, and pepperiness brings lift. It has juicy berry acidity and ripe, juicy, textured - but not too challenging - tannins, leading to a long finish.
