jamessuckling.com, May 2020

Focused and complex on the nose with stone, sliced cooked apple and hints of toffee. Full-bodied, with a density and freshness and liveliness. Vivid and energetic. All about class here. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2019

Compared to the 2017 vintage that shows a more accessible and full-bodied style, the 2018 Cervaro della Sala is a classic edition—it's about as classic as I have ever tasted this landmark white from Umbria to be. This...

An elegant white, creamy and well-knit, with a spine of citrusy acidity brightening flavors of poached apricot and lemon curd, plus accents of toasted hazelnut and salty mineral. This is medium- to full-bodied without...

The Antinori family has been involved in the production of wine since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the “Arte Fiorentina”, the Winemakers’ Guild of the city of Florence. During this entire long period, through twenty six generations, the family has always directly managed this work with courageous and, at times, innovative decisions. But always while maintaining a fundamental respect for tradition and for the territory in which they have operated.

Estates currently under the Marchesi Antinori wine empire include Tignanello, Badia a Passignano, Guado Al Tasso, Castello della Sala, Pian Delle Vigne, Peppoli, and Montenisa. While the core of the family's properties and production are focused in Tuscany, additional properties have expanded their regional diversity to include Orvieto Classico and Franciacorta.

The Tenuta Tignanello estate is located between the Greve and Pesa river valleys in the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. In these 127 hectares (320 acres) of vineyards, the Antinori family, more than anywhere else, has expressed its principles and working philosophy: reconcile tradition and modernity with wines which are strictly and authentically tied to their territories of origin. Solaia and Tignanello, the two iconic wines of the estate, have been defined by the international press as “among the most influential wines in the viticultural history of Italy” and are a constant symbol for the Antinori family of a continuous challenge, one driven by pure passion.

The Guado al Tasso estate is located approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the southwest of the city of Florence, near the medieval hamlet of Bolgheri in the Upper Maremma. Once part of a fiefdom of some 4,048 hectares (over 10,000 acres), today the 1000 hectare/2500 acre property extends from the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea to the inland hills, where the vineyards are cultivated on rocky and slightly calcareous soils. Of these, 300 are under vines which are planted to Vermentino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot along with small quantities of other grape varieties. In the 1930’s this property was inherited by Carlotta Della Gherardesca who married into the Antinori family.

Today the firm is run by Marquis Piero Antinori with the support of his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia. Tradition, passion, and intuition have been the three driving principles which have led the Marquis Antinori firm to become a leader in Italian wine.

Introducing the 2018 Antinori Cervaro della Sala IGT, a captivating white wine that hails from the picturesque region of Umbria in Italy. This exquisite blend, crafted by the renowned producer Antinori, showcases the true essence of Italian winemaking and embodies the epitome of elegance and finesse.

Pouring a radiant pale straw hue in the glass, this wine entices with its vibrant and luminous appearance. The nose is a symphony of aromas, captivating the senses with its focused and complex bouquet. Delicate notes of preserved lemon, crisp pear, and crushed mineral intertwine harmoniously, creating an olfactory experience that is simply enchanting.

On the palate, the 2018 Cervaro della Sala reveals its true character, unveiling layers of flavor that dance gracefully on the tongue. Barrel-fermented chardonnay takes the lead in this blend, contributing a sleek texture and introducing toasted hazelnut and vanilla bean undertones that enrich the crisp apple and pear flavors. A small percentage of stainless-steel-aged grechetto adds a refreshing acidity that balances the wine's subtle spice and gingery warmth.

This vintage is a testament to the cooler growing season of 2018, which favored finesse and elegance in the final product. The wine offers beautiful freshness and linearity, showcasing the winery's efforts to achieve the utmost refinement. Released while the fruit is still slightly closed or shy, this approach bodes exceptionally well for the wine's future evolution.

Renowned critics have bestowed high praise upon this extraordinary creation. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded an impressive score of 96 points, noting the wine's classic style and emphasis on preserved lemon, crisp pear, and crushed mineral. Wine & Spirits lauded the vivacity and balance of the 2018 Cervaro della Sala, predicting even greater integration of flavors in the years to come. James Suckling declared this wine to be all about class, with its focused and complex nose and vivacious palate. Wine Spectator commended its elegance and creamy texture, with citrusy acidity brightening flavors of poached apricot and lemon curd.

With a moderate alcohol percentage of 12.5%, the 2018 Antinori Cervaro della Sala IGT is a harmonious and refined white wine that is ready to be savored now. However, its potential for further development and evolution in the bottle suggests that patience will be rewarded. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with exquisite seafood or poultry dishes, this wine promises an unforgettable sensory experience. Indulge in the allure of Italian winemaking with this remarkable offering from Antinori.
