Every bit as good as the 2009, and I think better than the 2010 and 2016, the 2018 Château Léoville Poyferré is a total thrill that tops out my scale. Based on 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet...

Dark cherry, plum, spice and cacao with earthy notes and wood undertones. Cloves, too. Full-bodied, yet in control and poised. Balanced, complex and flavorful. Firm tannins and a long, precise finish. It goes on and on...

Composed of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Leoville Poyferre was aged in 80% new oak barriques. Deep garnet-purple colored, it barrels out of the glass with bold notes...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2021

Richly dense and impressively concentrated, this is a powerful wine. Swathes of black fruits show off the Cabernet structure and dark, ageworthy character of this wine. Drink the wine from 2027. ROGER VOSS

Gorgeously rich, heady and seductive nose, really expressive - you can sense the concentration in the rich blackcurrant aromas, soft hints of bramble bush, perfume and super soft spicing. Exuberant but with such clarity...

Concentrated but luscious, has so much character and depth to the fruit, a ton of liqourice, chocolate, blackberry. Smoke and grilled herbs, clear rosemary, tumeric even on the nose. There is higher alcohol than in some...

The 2018 Léoville-Poyferré performs similarly to the bottle tasted a few weeks earlier in the UK for my in-bottle round-up, although here I sense more opulence on the nose, perhaps more florality. The palate is...

With origins dating back to 1638, Saint Julien's expansive Leoville estate was the largest vineyard in all the Medoc at the time of the French Revolution. After various successions and changes, the estate was eventually divided into the three Leoville properties we know today: Leoville-Las-Cases, Leoville-Barton, and Leoville-Poyferre, established in 1840. The outstanding quality of Leoville Poyferre wines gained early recognition when it was ranked second growth in the 1855 Classification.

The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyards of Leoville-Poyferre into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravely, well-drained soils present in Saint Julien and a balanced environment for the vines. This diversity contributes to the wines magnitude and complexity.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre was most recently acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family. Didier Cuvelier has presided over the destiny of this gem since 1979. Chateau Moulin-Riche (from a specific terroir) and Pavillon de Leoville-Poyferre (from younger plots of vines) are also produced at the estate.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre is elegant, finely balanced and complex with intense color, velvety texture and excellent aging potential.

The 2018 Leoville-Poyferre is a remarkable Bordeaux Blend that hails from the prestigious St Julien region of Bordeaux, France. With a deep, garnet-red color, this wine is a true showstopper. The nose is incredibly expressive, offering a seductive blend of dark cherry, plum, and spice. Notes of cacao, earth, and wood undertones add complexity and depth. Cloves make a subtle appearance, contributing to the wine's aromatic allure.

On the palate, the Leoville-Poyferre is full-bodied and impeccably balanced. It exhibits a remarkable level of control and poise, showcasing the winemaker's expertise. The wine is both complex and flavorful, with rich layers of dark fruit and spicy accents. The firm tannins provide structure and depth, while the long, precise finish leaves a lasting impression.

Renowned wine critic James Suckling awarded this wine an impressive score of 97 points. He describes it as "balanced, complex, and flavorful," emphasizing its structured nature. Suckling suggests enjoying this wine after 2025, indicating its potential for further development and aging.

Wine Enthusiast also gave the 2018 Leoville-Poyferre a score of 97 points, praising its density and concentration. They note the wine's powerful nature and the impressive display of Cabernet structure. Wine Enthusiast recommends waiting until 2027 to fully appreciate this wine's dark, ageworthy character.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate joins the chorus of acclaim with a score of 97 points. Lisa Perrotti-Brown describes the wine as "full-bodied, rich, and decadent," highlighting its hedonic black fruits and velvety texture. She predicts that this wine will provide pleasure for at least 30 years, making it an excellent choice for collectors.

The 2018 Leoville-Poyferre has also received high praise from other critics, such as Jeff Leve, Decanter, Jeb Dunnuck, Vinous, Wine Spectator, and Jane Anson. They all highlight the wine's exceptional qualities, including its aromatic expressiveness, concentration, balance, and potential for long-term aging.

Overall, the 2018 Leoville-Poyferre is a truly remarkable wine that embodies the excellence of Bordeaux. With its captivating aromas, impressive structure, and remarkable depth of flavor, it is a wine that will surely delight any wine enthusiast. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for further aging, this wine is a testament to the craftsmanship of Leoville-Poyferre and the timeless appeal of Bordeaux blends.
