Blackcurrants, cassis, graphite and earth on the nose, then changing to roses, violets and berries. Full-bodied with incredible energy of fine tannins and lively acidity. It grows on the palate and escalates to the summit...

One of the few wines I did not receive a sample of to taste in barrel, it took only a moment to realize this was one of those rare, show-stopping gems that will blow your mind in the years to come. There is a unique...

The Wine Independent, May 2023

The 2019 Cheval Blanc is a blend of 58% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps from the glass with fruity suggestions of kirsch, black cherries, and juicy plums...

Decanter, October 2023

Released at a 32% discount to 2018, despite volumes being 30% down, this represented a 'bargain' for lovers of Cheval Blanc. Produced from 41 of 53 blocks, the grand vin accounted for 82% of production. So fine and...

The wine has power. It is dense but with such concentration along with a fine perfumed character from the Cabernet Franc in the blend. The wine's richness is impressive while leaving plenty of room for fruit. This fine...

This has loads of dark currant, fig and blackberry preserve notes that are supported by dense waves of loam and warm gravel, all hallmarks of the 2019 growing season. But there's an extra dimension here, thanks to its...

Vinous, February 2023

(96+ points) The 2019 Cheval Blanc is much more understated on the nose compared to its peers. Cedar and graphite merge with black fruit, but it is missing a bit of vigor at present. The palate is medium-bodied with fine...

Chateau Cheval Blanc is a Premier Grand Cru Classe “A” estate located near Pomerol, but within the commune of Saint-Emilion. Its 39 hectares are divided into forty-five plots. While most of the appellation's other famous estates have limestone soil, Cheval Blanc's soil is alluvial, with roughly equal proportions of gravel and clay.

The vineyard has an original combination of grape varieties: 49% Cabernet Franc, 47% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Each plot has its own specific profile and, to a certain extent, are treated like separate vineyards because of differences in the age of the vines, grape variety, soil type, surface area, type of rootstock, etc. The combination of these many facets accounts for Cheval Blanc’s great complexity.

Archives show that vines have been grown at Cheval Blanc at least as far back as the 15th century, but the most prestigious part of Cheval Blanc's history can be dated from 1832 when the core plot of the present-day estate was purchased by Jean-Jacques Ducasse, President of the Libourne Trade Tribunal. Over the next twenty years, the purchase of plots belonging to Chateau Figeac led to the vineyard as we know it today.

The impressive 6,000 square-meter cellar adjacent to the chateau, designed by Christian de Portzamparc and inaugurated in June 2011, houses a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and features two enormous waves of white concrete that rise magnificently out of the ground. There is a garden of wild grasses atop an artificial hill, whose gracious curves are overlooked by the chateau. The wine cellar holds fifty-two concrete vats in six rows.

Formerly known as vin de Figeac, this wine was first sold under the name Cheval Blanc in 1852. The first gold medal won by Cheval Blanc came at the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris and that distinction appears on the label.

Each vineyard plot is vinified separately. At the start of fermentation, the juice is gently pumped over three times daily. As fermentation proceeds, pump-over frequency decreases and is eventually stopped when the desired level of extraction has been reached.

The young wine is aged 16 to 18 months in new French oak barrels. Six to seven different coopers are used to ensure complexity and harmony. During this period, the wine is racked by hand five to seven times. Blending takes place after the first three months.

The 2019 Cheval Blanc is a Bordeaux Blend red wine hailing from the prestigious region of Bordeaux, France. With an alcohol percentage of 14.5%, this wine showcases the finesse and complexity that Cheval Blanc is renowned for.

In appearance, the wine displays a deep garnet-purple hue, captivating the eye with its richness and depth. The nose is immediately greeted by a seductive aroma of dark chocolate, blackcurrants, and perfumed red cherries. This bouquet is expressive and alluring, drawing you in with its intensity and allure.

On the palate, the wine begins slowly and delicately, gradually building in character and intensity. As you savor each sip, the acidity becomes more pronounced, imparting a mouthwatering and juicy sensation. The generous fruit flavors of strawberry and raspberry intertwine with subtle mint notes, creating a refreshing and cooling sensation. The soft tannins, perfectly balanced by the acidity, provide length and direction to the wine.

The 2019 Cheval Blanc is a wine of weight and depth, yet it also possesses delicacy and restraint. It showcases concentration and elegance, with a coolness that is truly remarkable. This wine exudes pure energy, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.

Composed of 58% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, this blend demonstrates the harmonious integration of different grape varieties. The result is a wine that is both powerful and refined, a true testament to the artistry of Cheval Blanc.

With a drinking window that extends from 2030 to 2050, this wine has the potential to age gracefully. It is recommended to give it some time in the cellar to allow its flavors to fully develop and evolve. However, for those who cannot resist the allure of this wine, it can be enjoyed now with great pleasure.

The 2019 Cheval Blanc has received high praise from wine critics. With a score of 99 from Decanter, 97 from Wine Spectator, 98 from Jane Anson, 100 from James Suckling, 100 from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 99 from Jeb Dunnuck, 100 from Jeff Leve, 97 from Wine Enthusiast, 96 from Vinous, and 100 from The Wine Independent, it is clear that this wine is truly exceptional. These accolades further solidify its status as one of the greatest wines of the vintage.

In conclusion, the 2019 Cheval Blanc is a sensational wine that exudes purity, energy, and complexity. With its expressive nose, refined palate, and remarkable aging potential, it is a true masterpiece from the esteemed Cheval Blanc estate.
