Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Introducing the exquisite 2019 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT, a remarkable red wine hailing from the enchanting region of Tuscany, Italy. Crafted with precision and passion by the renowned Fattoria Le Pupille, this proprietary blend showcases the unique terroir and winemaking expertise of the estate.

In the glass, this wine is a deep, alluring red, hinting at the richness and complexity that awaits. On the nose, a symphony of aromas unfolds, including crushed stone, rosemary, lavender, mint, and blackberry. These captivating scents are accompanied by subtle notes of oak spice, adding depth and intrigue.

The palate is an experience of sheer pleasure and sophistication. Full-bodied and impeccably structured, layers of powerful and polished tannins create a captivating texture. Flavors of ink, blackcurrants, and blueberries dance on the tongue, showcasing the harmonious blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. This wine is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistry of winemaking.

The critics have unanimously showered this wine with praise, with Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarding it an impressive 97+ points. They describe the 2019 Saffredi as explosive, boasting a compact and powerful quality of fruit with deep intensity and thick layering. They suggest that this beauty should be set aside for a few more years of aging to fully appreciate its potential.

James Suckling echoes this sentiment, awarding the wine a staggering 99 points. He praises its structured nature, noting the layers of powerful and polished tannins that create a seamless and enduring finish. Suckling recommends waiting at least five or six years before opening a bottle, allowing it to develop and evolve further.

Wine Spectator joins the chorus of admiration, awarding the wine a score of 96. They describe it as a deep, polished red with aromas and flavors of black currant, blackberry, plum, violet, and oak spice. The wine's dense structure is well-balanced and focused, with a terrific length that lingers on the palate. Wine Spectator suggests that this wine will be at its best from 2024 through 2037.

Vinous adds their voice to the acclaim, awarding the 2019 Saffredi a score of 97. They highlight its elegance, with opulent fruit profiles and a classic sense of structure that holds it all together. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, leather, and cloves infuse the wine with notable darkness. Vinous suggests allowing the wine a few more years to soften, as the tannins are still quite imposing.

Lastly, Wine Enthusiast awards this Bordeaux blend a well-deserved 95 points. They describe its nose as celebratory, akin to enjoying a slice of birthday cake in a comfortable armchair. Flavors of cherries, blackberries, vanilla, spice, and leather tantalize the palate, with hints of candied orange peel and dark chocolate. The wine's tightly wound tannins suggest it will benefit from cellaring, with a suggested drinking window from 2024 to 2037.

In conclusion, the 2019 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT is a masterpiece of Tuscan winemaking, offering elegance, power, and complexity in every sip. This wine is a testament to the passion and dedication of Fattoria Le Pupille, and a must-try for any wine enthusiast seeking an extraordinary experience.
