Produced from vines aged 60 to 90 years, planted in marly soils at 375 metres on the east-facing site below the village. The wine has a seductive richness to it, with lush, ripe apricot aromas enlivened by hints of lemon peel, mineral and smoke. The long maturation on the lees in fairly neutral casks gives this a slightly smoky, reductive cast that augurs well for long ageing. There is plenty of crisp acidity to balance the richness – definitely a wine for the years to come.

Pale lemon and lime with a deliberate reduction plus a slightly more ample white fruit. Flint stones and peanuts on the nose for Fred Buisson! This mildest of reductions really tightens the wine up with an excellent crystalline backbone, lime fresh finish yet the fruit is clearly ripe. Astonishingly good. Complex ripe citrus fruit. The product of old vines on clay.

(92+ points) The 2019 Saint-Romain Sous la Velle is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with notes of lemon oil, grapefruit, clear honey, toasted nuts and a touch of light reduction. Medium to full-bodied, chalky and incisive, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with racy acids and a long, electric finish. Once again, this will merit a few years' bottle age given its structure and incipient complexity.-WK
