Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2022

(98+ points) Last year, I giddily speculated whether the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle would warrant a 100-point score. While close—and I wouldn't completely discount it reaching that pinnacle in another decade or two—I'm...

For almost two centuries, the Jaboulet family has shared a common passion for the Rhone Valley, its history, its terroir, its exceptional people and wines.

In 1834, Antoine Jaboulet started working the land on the hills of Hermitage. Through his hard work and passion, he was able to produce a wine of exceptional quality. The business was passed on to his sons Henri and Paul, with the latter later giving his name to the company.

Since then, the generations have continued to succeed one another until in January 2006, the Frey family, longstanding winemakers in Champagne and owners of Chateau La Lagune in Bordeaux, acquired Maison Paul Jaboulet Aine thus adding to its portfolio of prestigious names.

The company’s hundred or so hectares of vineyards are tended with the greatest possible care. The wide diversity of terroirs and the influence of micro-climates favor the production of Syrah, the principal variety and the sole red grape, while Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier are used for the white wines.

Jaboulet wines represent generations of hard work and a passion for excellence and these values are adhered to by an unswerving commitment to improving vineyards, and through strategic acquisitions and work in the cellars, while respecting the environment at the same time.

The name of Hermitage La Chapelle is linked to the little chapel of Saint-Christophe overlooking the terraced vineyards along the Rhone. Maison Paul Jaboulet Aine has been the sole owner since 1919.

Hermitage La Chapelle is a blend of terroirs, including the prestigious hillsides of Meal and Bessards. Each one provides its own aromatic characteristics, as well as an elegant tannin structure, giving the wine great aging potential.

Introducing the exquisite 2019 Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage la Chapelle, a magnificent red wine hailing from the prestigious Hermitage appellation in the Rhone region of Northern France. This wine is a true gem, crafted with utmost precision and care by the esteemed producer, Paul Jaboulet Aine.

In the glass, this Hermitage la Chapelle showcases a deep, alluring red color that hints at its incredible depth and intensity. The nose is a symphony of aromas, with a distinct smoky undertone that adds complexity to the bouquet. Decanter notes that the wine was distinctly closed at the time of tasting, but the underlying smoky hints were present, promising a stunning aromatic profile.

On the palate, this wine reveals its true character. While not terribly full-bodied, it is undeniably intense and focused, capturing the essence of the Hermitage terroir. There are some firm tannins on the finish, which will require time to soften and integrate fully. However, the wine demonstrates excellent balance and vibrancy overall.

James Suckling, renowned wine critic, awards this wine a stellar score of 95 points. He describes it as a big, rich wine with intense fruit, showcasing flavors of blackberry, black olive, and black truffle. The chewy tannins are soft and juicy, adding depth and structure to the wine. Suckling notes a slight warmth on the finish, but the decadence and phenolics keep it in line, making it a very solid offering.

Jeb Dunnuck is equally impressed, awarding the 2019 Hermitage la Chapelle an impressive score of 97 points. He describes this wine as ripe, powerful, and sexy, showcasing classic La Chapelle gamey darker fruits, smoked meats, chocolate, sandalwood, and peppery spice. The wine is full-bodied, with an excellent concentration and ripeness. The polished tannins and great finish further elevate its appeal.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also weighs in with a score of 98 points, expressing excitement about the wine's potential. The reviewer notes exciting aromas of roasted meat, mocha, crushed stone, plum, and cassis on the nose. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, concentrated, and richly tannic, with a velvety texture. The finish is long and complex, with hints of cracked pepper and salted licorice.

Vinous joins the chorus of praise, awarding this wine 97 points. They describe its dark, vivid purple color and highly perfumed nose, filled with mineral and spice accents. The palate is sappy and penetrating, revealing deeply concentrated flavors of black and blue fruit preserve, candied violet, bitter chocolate, and fruitcake. The finish is wonderfully long, with an emphatic, mineral cut and youthfully gripping tannins.

Lastly, Wine Spectator awards this wine a score of 92 points, describing it as a modern-styled, powerful red. The flavors of blackberry ganache, cassis, and vanilla paste are complemented by notes of tobacco, charred cedar, and bitter orange peel. The finish is framed by silky yet firm tannins, adding elegance to the overall experience.

Overall, the 2019 Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage la Chapelle is a truly exceptional wine that showcases the best of Hermitage. With its intense flavors, impeccable balance, and potential for aging, it is a wine that will delight connoisseurs for years to come.
