Petrolo winery is owned by 4 generations by the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family. The estate extends over 109 acres, 825 to 1,500 feet above sea level, in an area known for prestigious wines since the Renaissance.

The vineyards are set in Val d'Arno Superiore, among the hills of the "Chianti Colli Aretini," bordering southeastern Chianti Classico. The somewhat loosely packed soil features layers of claystone, shale and limestone.

Petrolo aims to produce wines with character and terroir from Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, with 5,500 plants per hectare, production has been reduced to less than 8,000 cases in order to maximize quality. Hand-harvested and fermented in individual lots using native yeasts, the bulk of production is aged in French barriques, though they do employ the use of large oak casks.

Petrolo produces six dry wines and a Vin Santo, but is best known for the 100% Merlot, Galatrona, and the Cabernet-based Il Torrione.

Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship and one of the most awarded wines of the estate. It is a wine of great structure on the palate, and wildly aromatic on the nose. First produced in 1994, this 100% Merlot comes from estate vines planted in the early 90’s. The vineyard extends over 3 hectares, and is the first vineyard of Merlot that Petrolo planted. The yield per vine is limited, allowing for the concentration of components fundamental to achieve the structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Macerated on the skins for 2 weeks or more, the pump-overs are done often and with considerable care to allow for complete and gentle extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, and the wine is then aged in new French barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, which allows the finished product to achieve greater complexity.

Introducing the magnificent 2019 Petrolo Galatrona IGT, a red wine that exudes elegance and finesse. Crafted exclusively from 100% Merlot grapes, this wine is a true gem in the collection of the esteemed Petrolo winery. With its vibrant red color and enticing aromas, it captivates the senses from the very first pour.

On the nose, the 2019 Petrolo Galatrona delights with a wonderful floral touch, offering a beguiling and elegant bouquet with hints of wild strawberries. As it caresses the palate, it reveals a satin-like texture, followed by beautifully textured tannins that settle amidst a symphony of succulent cherry, raspberry, and blackberry fruit. The flavors are further accentuated by a herbal lift at the end, showcasing excellent drive and a smooth, satisfying finish.

Renowned wine critic Decanter awarded this exceptional vintage a remarkable score of 95 points. They praised its floral aromas, satin-like texture, and the harmonious interplay of cherry, raspberry, and blackberry flavors. According to Decanter, the 2019 Petrolo Galatrona has an excellent potential for aging, promising a long life ahead.

James Suckling, another respected critic, was equally enamored, awarding this wine an outstanding 99 points. He described the nose as a captivating blend of blackberries, black cherries, lavender, and violets. On the palate, the fruit intensity is remarkable, displaying both vibrancy and energy. Suckling commended its muscular yet agile character, stating that this wine offers a unique definition of Merlot in Tuscany. He suggests waiting until 2025 to fully appreciate its splendor.

Jane Anson, an influential wine writer, awarded the 2019 Petrolo Galatrona a score of 94 points. She praised the wine's power, which stems from the estate's clay soils, and noted the seductive contrast between the rough grain of the tannins and the luscious raspberry and blackberry coulis flavors. Anson also highlighted the freshness and herbaceous notes that reflect the wine's origin in the Chianti hills.

Wine Spectator, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and Vinous all joined in the chorus of praise for the 2019 Petrolo Galatrona. Wine Spectator bestowed a score of 96 points, applauding its concentrated nature and the interplay between earthy, savory notes and plum and blackberry fruit. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded an impressive 97 points, highlighting the wine's softness, lusciousness, and layers of dark fruit, spice, leather, and perfumed tobacco. Meanwhile, Vinous, with a score of 96 points, praised the wine's striking depth, freshness, and delineation, noting its blue/purple fruit, mocha, incense, espresso, and lavender flavors.

To fully appreciate the marvel that is the 2019 Petrolo Galatrona IGT, it is recommended to savor it after 2025, allowing it to reach its full potential. This wine promises an extraordinary drinking experience, with its refinement, complexity, and the unmistakable mark of excellence that characterizes Petrolo's winemaking.
