In 2019, it ended up being roughly 30% new oak, and I think there were some stems included as well. It’s another magical wine from this estate, boasting a dense purple hue as well as a perfume of black raspberries, cassis, blueberry liqueur, spring flowers, toasted bread, and lavender. Full-bodied on the palate, with an incredible mouthfeel, riveting purity, and ultra-fine tannins, it’s unquestionably one of the all-time greats of this cuvée. Give bottles 3-4 years and enjoy over the following two decades or more.

Expansive dark berry liqueur, cherry cola, licorice and potpourri scents are complemented by an exotic spice flourish. Broad and fleshy on the palate, offering deeply concentrated blackberry, boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors complemented by sweetening mocha and floral pastille nuances. Firms up with air and finishes with outstanding clarity, building tannins and superb, floral-driven persistence. -- Josh Raynolds

This is weighty but with definition, as violet and lavender nuances chime in on the lush finish, giving it contrast and detail. Best from 2024 through 2035. 250 cases made, 50 cases imported. — JM

Pierre Usseglio

Domaine Pierre Usseglio was founded in Chateauneuf-du-Pape by Pierre’s father, Francis in 1948. Pierre eventually took the reigns and, since 1999, his children have run the estate. The Domaine holds 15 small vineyard plots throughout the AOC, totaling 22 hectares. Only one of those hectares is planted to white grapes. The remainder, with a mix of rocky and sandy soils, represent approximately 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, 2% Counoise and 2% Muscardin. Domaine Pierre Usseglio makes three red wines and one white.
