Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a Bolgheri estate which lies in the heart of Tuscany's coastal region, Maremma, also home to Sassicaia. The estate is one of the icon wineries of Italy, producing some of the finest Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in Tuscany, grown in the alluvial, volcanic, and marine-based soils which comprise the region’s terroir.

Founded by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in 1981, Ornellaia’s first vineyard plantings were in 1982 and the new winery started operations with the 1985 vintage. Robert Mondavi and Marchesi de' Frescobaldi became co-owners of the estate in 2002, but since 2005, the estate has been exclusively owned by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi.

Grapes which are not designated for the winery’s flagship Bordeaux-styled release Ornellaia, one of the first Super Tuscans, are "declassified" to the production of Le Serre Nuove, which usually has more Merlot, and sees less oak influence. The winery produces several other labels, including Le Volte, a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a Sauvignon Blanc, Poggio alla Gazze, and Ornus, a sweet, late harvest wine from Petit Manseng.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia also owns the Masseto winery and estate, which produces an equally world-renowned and lauded single-vineyard Merlot.

Coming primarily from the Estate’s younger vineyards and made with the same passion and attention to detail as Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is a true “second wine”. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it combines generosity and depth of flavor with an engaging and vibrant personality.

Grapes are hand-picked into small baskets, then double-sorted both before and after de-stemming. Every variety and block is vinified separately. Fermentation is stainless steel followed by 10 days of maceration on the skins.

The wine ages in oak barrels, 25% new, for about 12 months. The components are then blended and returned to barrels for another 3+ months of aging. After bottling, the wine matures and stabilizes in bottle for six months at the winery before release.

Le Serre Nuove releases are dark red with forward fruit, complemented by floral and savory notes. The body is medium-plus, with velvety texture and a long, persistently juicy finish.

This complex aroma is both inviting and intriguing, drawing you in for a closer exploration. As you take your first sip, the wine unveils its true character on the palate, showcasing a medium-to-full-bodied profile that evolves and grows with each moment. The firm yet polished tannins provide a sturdy structure, while the flavorful finish lingers on the taste buds, leaving a lasting impression.

Respected wine critic James Suckling awarded this vintage a remarkable score of 95 points, praising its solid and well-crafted nature. He suggests that this wine is best enjoyed after 2023, allowing it to further develop and reach its full potential. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also lauds this blend, awarding it a score of 94 points. They highlight the focus and detail present in this vintage, with its sharp contours and etched character, particularly influenced by the Cabernet Franc.

A harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, the Le Serre Nuove delights with elegant fruit notes of blackberry and dark currant. It displays a well-defined nature, with a streak of pure black currant, blackberry, cedar, and rosemary. The wine exhibits a linear and vibrant quality, with an echo of fruit and spice lingering on the finish.

Vinous also joins the chorus of praise, awarding this vintage a score of 93 points. They describe it as delicate, refined, and exceptionally beautiful, with floral accents and a mid-weight structure that exudes finesse. The aromas of dark red berry fruit, licorice, incense, cedar, and aromatic dark spice come together seamlessly, creating a truly remarkable experience.

Jane Anson, a renowned wine critic, also commends the Le Serre Nuove, awarding it a score of 94 points. She describes it as a classic Bordeaux blend with Tuscan generosity, noting flavors of charcoal, campfire smoke, black fruits, and rich spiced mint leaf. The wine showcases firm tannins and a punch of flavor that gradually gives way to attractive freshness and lift, ending with finesse.

Jeb Dunnuck gives this vintage a score of 94 points as well, noting its lifted aromas of candied cherry, raspberry, menthol, and cedar. This medium-to-full-bodied wine offers a more structured and linear feel, characteristic of the vintage. The forward and wound tannins are accompanied by fleshy fruit flavors of plum skin, black cherry, and Mediterranean herbs. Dunnuck suggests that the Le Serre Nuove will continue to evolve and improve over the next 10-15 years.

In conclusion, the 2019 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove is a wine of exceptional quality and craftsmanship. Its harmonious blend of varietals, elegant structure, and complex flavors make it a true representation of the Tuscan terroir. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future indulgence, this wine promises a remarkable experience that will leave a lasting impression.
