Wine Enthusiast, October 2022

The magnificent Merlot in the blend has pushed up the alcohol, while also giving a velvet touch and power to the wine. This estate is now on top form, producing this generously ripe, black plum flavored wine. It is lifted...

Such a seductive soft perfume to the nose, delicate yet generous aromatics of cherry and rose. The palate is juicy and fresh, charming yet energetic with such crystalline purity and balance. Tannins are smooth but softly...

The purity of fruit is pretty phenomenal here with blackcurrants, cherries and crushed-stone undertones. Floral notes of roses and violets, too. Full-bodied, yet this is a linear style with super fine tannins and great...

A brilliant vintage at Troplong, displaying an enticing blend of power and restraint, or rather measured extraction and controlled power. This was a warm year with leisurely ripening where you could go all out, but here...

Has any Bordeaux château realized a more wholesale stylistic revolution in so short a time than Troplong Mondot? Since Aymeric de Gironde arrived at the estate in late 2017, the ultra powerful "shock and awe" style of the...

98+ The 2019 Troplong Mondot is deep garnet-colored. It opens with violets, dark chocolate, and black cherries on the nose, giving way to notes of licorice, cardamom, and wet slate. The palate is full, taut, and muscular...

The 2019 Troplong Mondot is composed and beautifully-focused on the nose, well-defined with vivacious brambly red fruit suffused with minerals and black truffle shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black...

The Grand Vin 2019 Château Troplong Mondot checks in as 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a pretty...

A flicker of savory leads off, before being quickly absorbed into the core of juicy plum, blackberry and fig compote flavors. Long laces of alder, black tea and espresso crema wrap around the finish, where a hint of...

Bordeaux’s Chateau Troplong-Mondot is a large wine estate on the Right Bank of the Gironde River overlooking the village of Saint Emilion. Its 33-hectare vineyard is planted traditionally with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The chateau dates back to 1745 and Troplong-Mondot was originally part of one sizeable domaine which included the vineyards of Chateau Pavie. The current estate was established in 1850 when Raymond-Theodore Troplong acquired Mondot, expanded the vineyard, and promoted its reputation. Following a trend of that period, his heir Edouard Troplong later added Mondot to his name and Troplong-Mondot was born.

The property passed into the hands of the Valette family at the beginning of the 20th century, with Christine Valette taking up management of the property in 1980. Since then, things quickly changed for the better. The quality of the wines improved and Chateau Troplong-Mondot became known as one of the top wines of the Right Bank.

Christine Valette has since passed away and today, the estate is managed by Xavier Pariente who has been involved with the estate since 2002. In 2006, it was awarded the Premier Grand Cru Classe B in the Saint Emilion classification.

Chateau Troplong-Mondot is grown on extensive vineyards rich in limestone and clay soils. Powerful and well-structured with pronounced complex tannins, its deep aromas of truffles and blackberries develop over time.

The grapes are hand-harvested, totally destemmed, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, moving to oak barrels for secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine is matured in oak barrels (75% new oak and 25% one-year old) for 12 to 24 months depending on the vintage. The average production of the grand vin is between 60,000 to 90,000 bottles.

The 2019 Troplong-Mondot Bordeaux Blend is a wine that commands attention and deserves high praise. It hails from the esteemed Bordeaux region of France, specifically the sub-region of Saint Emilion, a place known for its rich history and high-quality wines.

This red wine is a complex blend that combines the bold flavors of Bordeaux varietals with the elegance of the vintage. On the nose, it presents a seductive soft perfume with delicate yet generous aromatics of cherry and rose. The palate is juicy and fresh, offering a charming yet energetic experience with crystalline purity and balance.

The wine's tannins are smooth but softly textured, adding nuance to the flavors where refreshing high toned ripe red and black cherry fruit play alongside mint, dark chocolate, and graphite. It is powerful but carefully controlled from start to finish, leaving a satisfying overall mouthful and lasting impression.

The wine's color is a deep, inviting red, and it's sealed with a traditional cork closure. With an alcohol percentage of 15.0, it is powerful but not overwhelming. The wine has been highly praised by critics, including Decanter, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and Wine Enthusiast, with high scores reflecting its quality and depth of flavor.

The 2019 Troplong-Mondot Bordeaux Blend is a wine that exemplifies the luxurious flavors and textures of Bordeaux wines. It is a blend that speaks to the region's terroir and the skillful winemaking of the Troplong-Mondot producer. This is a wine to savor and enjoy, a true testament to the beauty and complexity of Bordeaux wines.
