Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2023

The 2019 Alión was cropped from a drier vintage compared with the average, and the wines from that year tend to be powerful, concentrated and with structure. They shortened the maceration by 11 days and used concrete for...

While tightly meshed and structured by firm, chalky tannins, this red has a plush, polished frame matched to a pretty range of boysenberry coulis, violet, mocha and Earl Grey flavors. Reveals hints of tar and black...

Vega Sicilia, one of Spain’s most famous and legendary wine estates, is located in Ribera del Duero, in the Valbuena de Duero in the province of Valladolid, Castilla y Leon. Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lacanda y Chaves, who brought cuttings of Bordelaise varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, and Pinot Noir from Bordeaux, the estate changed hands several times before it was purchased in 1982 by the Alvarez family. This marked the beginning of one of the most prosperous periods in the history of the company.

A large estate of nearly 1,000 hectares, just 210 hectares are planted to vines which have been grown on the Vega Sicilia estate for over a hundred years. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are planted to three varieties: Tempranillo (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and are used to produce Vega Sicilia Unico and Valbuena, as well as wine for their sister property, Bodegas Alion.

Founded on an unwavering commitment to quality and the pursuit of excellence, Vega Sicilia’s guiding principle is that “the best wine is still to be made”.

The 2019 Vega Sicilia Alion is a remarkable red wine from Spain's renowned Ribera Del Duero region. This proprietary blend showcases the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of Vega Sicilia, a producer known for their commitment to excellence.

In the glass, this wine exhibits a deep, garnet color that hints at its rich and intense character. The nose is immediately seductive, with aromas of ripe, tarry plums and black cherries enticing the senses. Notes of violets, rocks, coffee, and graphite add complexity and intrigue. Refined hints of balsamic fruit and cocoa powder further enhance the aromatic profile.

On the palate, the Alion reveals its true nature. Full-bodied and juicy, it possesses an iron fist of tannins that provide structure and depth. However, these tannins are remarkably velvety and polished, ensuring a smooth and luxurious mouthfeel. The wine's long, focused finish showcases finesse and layers of flavor, leaving a lasting impression.

According to esteemed wine critic James Suckling, this wine is drinkable now but will reach its peak after 2025. Suckling awarded it an impressive score of 95 points, praising its finesse and layered complexity. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also lauds the 2019 Alion, awarding it 94 points. They describe it as powerful, concentrated, and juicy, with ripe fruit flavors and slightly dusty tannins. Wine Spectator gives it a score of 92 points, noting its tight structure, plush frame, and lingering finish.

With only 256,526 bottles produced, the 2019 Vega Sicilia Alion is a highly sought-after wine that exemplifies the best of Ribera Del Duero. Its exceptional quality and aging potential make it a worthy addition to any wine collector's cellar.
