Pinot noir accounts for 75 percent of this blend, the lovely coppery color pointed up by red wine from pinot noir grown in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The wine feels honest, settling from heady to brisk as the deep, plummy savor extends into a mineral finish. It lasts with the gentle delicacy of pinot noir.

A seamless rosé Champagne, with detailed flavors of baked raspberry, oyster shell, blood orange sorbet and pickled ginger draped on the palate like fine cashmere. Made from 73% Pinot Noir, 24% Chardonnay, and the rest Meunier, the NV Champagne Royale Reserve Brut Rosé is based on the 2018 vintage and has 9 grams per liter dosage. The nose is ripe and fleshy, with strawberry, cherry, and crushed roses. It is rounded and fluffy in its mousse, though it is dry, with raspberry, almond, and a silky texture on the finish. This is certainly a crowd pleaser to drink now or over the next ten years as an aperitif, on its own, or at the end of the night. - Audrey Frick

The newly released NV Brut Rosé Royale Réserve is based on the 2018 vintage and was disgorged early this year. Bursting with aromas of red apple, freshly baked bread, mint and petals, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and gourmand, with a generous core of fruit, a pillowy mousse and a chalky finish. Philipponnat opted to use less red still wine than usual in the blend, given the power and intensity of color evident in 2018. - William Kelley
