This release of Initial from Anselme Selosse is absolutely beautiful and drinking with great style and complexity today. The superb bouquet wafts from the glass in a complex blend of apple, pear, buttered biscuits, chalky soil tones, a discreet framing of buttery oak and a delicate topnote of fresh nutmeg. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a great core of fruit, superb soil signature, frothy mousse and outstanding length and grip on the perfectly balanced and very, very classy finish. A gorgeous bottle of à point Blanc de Blancs with years and years of life still ahead of it. 2015-2030+.

Disgorged November 2014, this cuvée is based on the 2007, 2006 and 2005 vintages and has immensely complex aromas with a strong core of chalky minerals, honey, peach and almond milk - the sweet and savory mix is really engaging. The palate is soft and supple with a long, creamy drive that twists dry and finishes pure with lemon pith and gentle toffee. Complete, polished and silky, this is a handsome interpretation of clay-driven richness, delivered with balance and flair. Drink now. - Nick Stock

Musky smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of orange, pear skin, honeydew and white flowers. Shows superb energy and clarity on the palate, offering vibrant citrus pith and underripe orchard fruit flavors plus a touch of iodine. Closes on a stony note, with very good focus and length and building florality. -- Josh Raynolds

The NV Initial, Selosse's entry-level Champagne, captures all of the signatures of the house style. The flavors are rich, bold and seductive, with a Chassagne-like richness that is impossible to miss. Candied lemon, spice, dried flowers, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes ring out on the deeply expressive, resonant finish. This is a slightly heavier, richer version of the Initial, a wine that is usually a bit fresher. The current release is based on vintages 2010, 2009 and 2008. Disgorged December 11, 2014.
