Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2012

Vega Sicilia, one of Spain’s most famous and legendary wine estates, is located in Ribera del Duero, in the Valbuena de Duero in the province of Valladolid, Castilla y Leon. Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lacanda y Chaves, who brought cuttings of Bordelaise varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, and Pinot Noir from Bordeaux, the estate changed hands several times before it was purchased in 1982 by the Alvarez family. This marked the beginning of one of the most prosperous periods in the history of the company.

A large estate of nearly 1,000 hectares, just 210 hectares are planted to vines which have been grown on the Vega Sicilia estate for over a hundred years. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are planted to three varieties: Tempranillo (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and are used to produce Vega Sicilia Unico and Valbuena, as well as wine for their sister property, Bodegas Alion.

Founded on an unwavering commitment to quality and the pursuit of excellence, Vega Sicilia’s guiding principle is that “the best wine is still to be made”.

The 9998 Vega Sicilia 2012 Release Unico Reserva Especial is a truly exceptional wine that embodies the essence of Spanish winemaking. Crafted by the renowned producer Vega Sicilia in the Castilla y Leon region of Ribera Del Duero, this red wine is a testament to their commitment to quality and tradition.

In the glass, this wine exhibits a deep, ruby red color that hints at its complexity and depth. The nose is immediately captivated by an alluring bouquet of macerated cherries, lavender, marmalade, and candied orange peel. These aromas mingle together harmoniously, creating a symphony of scents that entice the senses.

On the palate, the 9998 Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial reveals its true character. Medium-bodied and velvety smooth, this wine caresses the palate with plush, rounded tannins. Vibrant dark berries, maraschino cherries, and a hint of Chinese 5-spice dance on the tongue, creating a tantalizing flavor profile that is both complex and satisfying.

The finish of this wine is nothing short of elegant and sensual. It lingers gracefully, leaving a lasting impression of its impeccable balance and refinement. Each sip is a journey through layers of flavor, with every note harmoniously intertwined.

This particular release of the Unico Reserva Especial is a blend of the exceptional vintages of 1991, 1994, and 1999. While some may find the absence of a specific vintage less intellectually satisfying, this wine proves that it is a masterpiece in its own right. It showcases the skill and artistry of the winemaker in creating a blend that is greater than the sum of its parts.

With an alcohol percentage of 14.0, this wine has the perfect balance of strength and finesse. It is a wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, with a recommended drinking window from 2013 to 2025+.

In conclusion, the 9998 Vega Sicilia 2012 Release Unico Reserva Especial is a wine that exemplifies the best of Spanish winemaking. Its seductive aromas, lush flavors, and elegant finish make it a truly captivating experience. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with a gourmet meal, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression on any wine connoisseur.
