For over three generations, the Sassetti family has been producing wine in Montalcino. The “Podere Pertimali”, with its 16 hectares of vineyards, is nestled on a slope in the Montosoli hill, north of Montalcino—one of the most favorable terroirs for Sangiovese in the area. Maintaining the family tradition, Livio Sassetti has renovated and extended the vineyards, retaining the genetic material of the original vines and preserving their characteristics.

Livio was among the founders of Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino in 1967. In 1968, he built a terracotta wall in his cellar, to keep the old vintages of the wines produced by his family. Today, this collection counts over 1000 bottles, among which stands out as the ‘grandmother’ of the current production - a bottle from the 1915 vintage!

In 1999, the Sassetti family purchased a property in the Tuscan Maremma, La Querciolina, within the DOC Montecucco. Thanks to their passion and experience, untended fields were nutured into into vineyards which produce Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo of great quality.

Today, both wineries are managed by Lorenzo Sassetti, Livio’s son, who is focused in continuing his family’s winemaking tradition.

Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrel for 36 months, and again in bottle for another 6 months.

The 2018 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino is a captivating red wine that demands attention. With its deep, balsamic-tinged black cherry and plum sauce aromas, this wine immediately captivates the senses. As I take a sip, I am enveloped in a velvety texture that is almost opulent in feel, with a dense wave of ripe red fruits that dance across my palate. The wine is complemented by nuances of sweet lavender and tobacco, adding layers of complexity.

This Brunello di Montalcino leaves my palate clenched with its fine tannins and primary concentration, creating a classic sensation that transcends the vintage. The finish seems to go on for nearly a minute, with hints of cocoa and sweet herbs lingering, enticing me to take another sip. It is truly a wow-worthy experience.

The production at the Pertimali estate was slightly lower due to the spring frost, but this has resulted in a wine of exceptional quality. In fact, all of the juice that is typically reserved for the Riserva was included in this straight Brunello, making it one of the top wines of the vintage. The decision was a wise one, as this wine showcases the best of what Brunello di Montalcino has to offer.

According to various esteemed wine critics, this wine has received high praise. James Suckling awarded it an impressive 96 points, noting its intense aromas of black cherries, lavender, and spice. Kerin O'Keefe gave it a score of 95, describing its truffle, forest floor, and leather aromas, as well as its vibrant palate of tart red cherry and pomegranate. Jeb Dunnuck also gave it 94+ points, highlighting its rich layers and ripe tannins.

The 2018 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino is a wine that will age beautifully, with James Suckling recommending to try it after 2026. However, if you can't resist the temptation, it can be enjoyed now with a decanting to fully appreciate its complexity. This wine is a true gem from Tuscany, offering an unforgettable experience for any wine enthusiast.
