One of the legendary Dominus, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably in the same league as the 2018, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2010, and 1991, and to my mind, wine simply doesn't get any better. Sporting a dense purple hue...

The purity of the cabernet fruit is so enticing, with blackcurrant, rose petals, nettles and subtle graphite. Touches of terra cotta and licorice. Full-bodied with super integrated tannins that are wonderfully polished...

Wine Spectator, October 2022

(96-99 points) This shows density on par with the ’18, with a core of cassis and plum notes still tucked away a bit behind a wall of structure, while singed toast and licorice hints peek in throughout. The youthfully...

The 2021 Dominus is a powerful, tightly-coiled wine that is holding back quite a bit of reserve. There's real depth and resonance waiting to emerge as the wine matures. Floral overtones and bright acids confer energy to a...

The story of Dominus started in the late 1960’s when Bordeaux winemaker Christian Moueix fell in love with Napa Valley and its wines. He discovered the historic Napanook Vineyard, one of the first vineyards planted in the Napa Valley, and in 1981 and entered into a partnership to develop it.

Becoming its sole owner in 1995, he chose the name “Dominus” or “Lord of the Estate”, to underscore his longstanding commitment to stewardship of the land. From this estate, Moueix produces two wines: the flagship “cult” red Dominus, and Napanook, a lively and youthful blend of Bordeaux varieties that is meant to be consumed more as an “every day” wine.

The estate is situated on the foothills of the Mayacamas range and enjoys a temperate climate. 103 acres are predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon along with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on gravelly and clay loam soil. The estate practices sustainability and is at the forefront of preserving the environment.

The Dominus winery itself is noted for its one-of-a-kind construction, designed by visionary Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. Constructed from gabions filled with basalt rocks, the unique design provides insulation from the heat and cold, while allowing natural light to filter through.

Known for its complexity and balance, Dominus demonstrates the potential of a wine produced on the exceptional terroir of the Napanook vineyard. Structured, seamless and perfectly integrated, this is an elegant wine that only improves with age. Bunches are hand-sorted, complemented by optical scanning to ensure only the highest quality grapes are used, gently pressed at low-pressure, and fermented in separate lots before resting in 100% French oak.

It is recommended to decant Dominus prior to serving, to allow it to develop its full potential, particularly when consuming young vintages.

The 2021 Dominus Proprietary Red Wine is an exquisite blend that pays a grand tribute to its Californian pedigree. As a proprietary blend, this wine is a unique expression of the Dominus Estate's mastery, skillfully marrying various red grape varietals to create a harmonious fusion that is as complex as it is delightful.

Aesthetically, this wine is a bewitching shade of red, promising a taste experience that is both rich and intense. Holding a glass of this wine to the light, one can appreciate the depth of its hue, a testament to the quality of the grapes and the meticulous process that brought it from vine to bottle.

The nose of the 2021 Dominus Proprietary Red Wine is a complex bouquet, a melange of ripe fruit, delicate spice, and earthy undertones that speaks to its Napa Valley origins. The North Coast region of California is renowned for its idyllic grape-growing conditions, and this wine is a testament to the terroir's potency.

On the palate, this wine does not disappoint. It carries a depth and finesse that comes from careful aging, a balance of flavors that dance on the tongue and leave a memorable finish. The harmony of the blend is evident in every sip, showcasing the producer's prowess in wine crafting.

In essence, the 2021 Dominus Proprietary Red Wine is more than just a beverage. It is an experience, a journey through the sun-kissed vineyards of Napa, and a celebration of Californian winemaking at its finest. This is a wine that invites you to savor it slowly, appreciating the magic that each grape contributes to the symphony in a glass.
