The name Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) comes from the Burundians, an ancient Germanic people originating in Bornholm who settled in the area during the early Middle Ages.
Burgundy’s best red and white wines set the gold standard for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At the top of their game, Burgundy wines are acknowledged as some of the most aromatically complex, seductive and silky on the globe. This thanks in part to their indescribable melding of fruits, flowers, minerals, and earth, as well as their facility in projecting an authoritative flavor sans excess weight.
Unfortunately, for many, the best Burgundies are only produced in limited numbers. Burgundy wines can spell trouble for the non-connoisseur—there are still many examples of less than stellar, overpriced bottles for sale. This fact is due to the nature of the region’s vineyard ownership. An individual, small premier cru vineyard may be subdivided amongst a dozen or more owners. These owners may produce everything from plonk to exceptional wines—all at the same price—depending on the skills of the producer.
The Côte d'Or, or "golden slope," is the in heart of Burgundy and is home to the region’s most famous, and pricey, wines. This 30-mile-long ribbon of vineyards is where all the Grand Cru vineyards (except for Chablis Grand Cru) are found. The Côte d'Or lies just south of Dijon extending to Chagny. The greater Burgundy region also envelopes Chablis to the northern extreme, while the Côte Chalonnaise and Maconnais regions are located to the south of the Côte d'Or. Beaujolais, at the extreme southern end of the Burgundy region, almost touches the outreaches of Lyon.
Burghound, 94 points: (92-94 points) This is also quite restrained with ultra-pure aromas of wet stone, floral hints, sandalwood and very fresh red berry fruit scents. There is a focused power to the robust yet refined medium-bodied flavors...
Antonio Galloni's Vinous, 95 points: A classic and typical Perrot-Minot wine, the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin is built on a serious core of huge, intense fruit. Dark blue/black fruit, sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and new leather notes abound in a rich...
Burghound, 93 points: (91-93) Here the nose is sufficiently reduced that it is hard to read though the underlying fruit appears ripe. There is a supremely elegant mouth feel to the silky and lacy flavors that dance across the palate before...
Stephen Tanzer's IWC, 94 points: Good dark red. Expressive, high-toned nose shows a leesy complexity to the aromas of cherry, flowers, soil and what Patrick Landanger called "blood peach." The palate offers uncanny energy and perfume, with sweet fruit...
Antonio Galloni's Vinous, 90 points: (AG88-90 points) A deep, fleshy wine, the 2011 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau possesses gorgeous balance. This is a decidedly dark, rich style of Chambolle built on a serious core of black fruit. This cool...
Antonio Galloni's Vinous, 94 points: (AG92-94 points) A dark, powerful Burgundy, the 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is another wine deeply marked by site. Black fruit, smoke, tar, incense and scorched earth all come together in this decidedly masculine...
Burghound, 96 points: (BH93-96 points) Vinified with 50% whole clusters. Here the nose is quite different from that of the Bèze as this is much more floral with notes of lavender, dried rose petal and cool red currant. There is superb detail...
Stephen Tanzer's IWC, 92 points: (ST90-92 points) Good full red. Red berry, truffle and spice aromas show an almost liqueur-like sweetness. Lush, concentrated and sweet, with lovely depth and definition to the red fruit and spice flavors. This...
Burghound, 94 points: (BH91-94 points) An overtly spicy and very earth nose of red currant, plum and wet stone scents. There is lovely richness to the round, full-bodied and highly energetic medium-bodied flavors that exhibit firm tannins on...
Burghound, 95 points: (BH92-95 points) An extraordinarily spicy and complex nose evidences cool, fresh and admirably pure aromas of cassis, red berries and plum. There is a floral note on the remarkably rich, concentrated and extract-rich...
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 92 points: The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru has a lifted vivacious bouquet with small, dark cherries and raspberry fruit bolstered by the 80% new oak and the 30% whole-cluster fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp...
Stephen Tanzer's IWC, 92 points: (ST90-92 points) Good deep red. Very reduced aromas of black raspberry, licorice and game. Rich, smoky and very fine-grained, with impressive concentration and density to its dark fruit flavors. Ripeness verging on...
