Chateau Cos d’Estournel has come a long way since 2000, when Michel Reybier bought the property and began a total top to bottom transformation of both the cellar and the vineyard. Now routinely vying with Montrose as the highest scoring St Estephe in any vintage, Cos d’Estournel is undoubtedly “a wine of true first-growth quality” (Parker). We have often been drawn to this Chateau, but particularly in more challenging vintages, as they have never been afraid to slash yields, and keep selection strict to maintain their standards. 2021 rewarded that sort of approach and we’re happy to report Cos d’Estournel didn’t disappoint, with a St Estephe that “stands out for its structure, subtle power, balance and finesse” (Decanter).
96 points, Decanter: “This stands out for its structure, subtle power, balance and finesse. Perfumed and softly sweet on the nose, ripe and concentrated, glorious and inviting. Creamy and chalky at the same time, lovely texture and density with bright and concentrated strawberry and red cherry fruit. Crisp, sweet, salty and sour, a lovely combination of flavours and textures with great drive and an undercurrent of minerality and salty wet stone finish – real St-Estèphe signature.”
96 points & Cellar Selection, Wine Enthusiast: “Dense and seriously structured, this wine with its polished leather and cedar aromas is concentrated in tannins. The wine's structure dominates, partnering acidity and ripe texture.”
96 points, Wine Cellar Insider: “Dried flowers, smoke, licorice, Indian spices, black cherries, plums, chocolate, and a hint of blue fruit shows up with ease in the perfume. The palate is where the wine shines. Here, you find layers of supple, creamy ripe, black and red fruits, polished textures, creamy, soft tannins and a finish that builds and lingers with its waves of fruit and subtle, smoked herb note that comes in at the end of the finish.”
