We have another beautiful Riesling from one of the Rheingau’s most historic properties, and it’s an elegant, bone-dry expression of a single parcel on the Schloss Johannisberg estate. Schloss Johannisberg bottles several single vineyard Rieslings from across this legendary estate, which has been producing wine since the 1100s. By the 1700s it had become what may be the very first dedicated Riesling vineyard, and it has been in continuous production ever since. 2022 will be the property’s 302nd vintage, and in the modern era it has been reestablished as “among the very finest Rheingau Riesling producers” (Wine Advocate), thanks to cellarmaster Stefan Doktor. Taking the reins in 2016, he has made use of the full range of the extraordinary terroirs on the estate, while converting all 50 hectares to organic farming, implementing stricter selection standards, and upgrading the cellar.
‘Bronzelack’ is their dry cuvee from a cooler microclimate on the western edge of the estate, an area that performed beautifully in the warm and dry 2022 vintage. The distinctive Taunus quartzite soil (for the geology nerds out there) is well draining and really makes the vines work for it, yielding extraordinary mineral tension and depth of flavor. The balance here is extraordinary, and while completely dry it has beautiful layers of orchard fruit and citrus to go with its “huge wave of wet stone minerality” (Suckling). Undeniably classic, it will have no trouble cellaring for the next 25 years. Cheers!
95 points, JamesSuckling.com: “This super-elegant 2022 dry riesling has an expressive peachy nose with delicate orange, nutmeg and chamomile nuances. Then you take a sip and a huge wave of wet stone minerality pours over you, although the wine is sleek and racy. Extremely long and precise wet stone finish that takes your breath away.”
