The Mâconnais has always had a reputation for being a source of affordable, crowd-pleasing white Burgundy, but that relative lack of pretension has also made it fertile ground for younger winemakers with greater ambitions. Chassagne-Montrachet’s Théo Dancer has certainly embraced that opportunity with Roc Breïa, an exciting new project that Wine Advocate has already singled out for those “keen to remain on Burgundy's cutting edge”.

Working with a single contiguous block of roughly 10 hectares gives Dancer room to pursue the kind of farming he wants in a way that would be much harder among the fragmented holdings of the Côte de Beaune where ownership changes from row to row. He releases only one Pinot Noir and one Chardonnay from the property, both labeled Vin de France, and we’re very excited to have an allocation of the Chardonnay in stock.

Théo Dancer is the son of noted white Burgundy producer Vincent Dancer and has taken over the family domaine in recent years. He discovered this vineyard in the Mâconnais a handful of years ago and was intrigued by the old vine material, including 60+ year old Chardonnay vines.. He has spent the past few years revitalizing the soils with cover crops, organic farming, and agroforestry, and this is a rare chance to jump in on the ground floor of such a singular new project.

“Théo Dancer is one of the new stars of Burgundy.”
