The 1931 Bodegas Toro Albala Don PX Convento Selección is an exceptional Pedro Ximenez wine from the Montilla Moriles sub-region in Andalucia, Spain. This vintage stands out not only for its impressive age but also for the unique characteristics it has developed over 84 years in the barrel before bottling.
With an alcohol content of 18.0%, this white wine presents an amber color with green tints, an indication of its advanced age. The wine is a product of Bodegas Toro Albala, a respected producer known for its meticulous and traditional winemaking methods.
Luis Gutierrez of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this wine an impressive score of 98. Gutierrez describes the wine as part of Toro Albala’s ‘vinos olvidados’ or ‘forgotten wines,’ highlighting its long maturation process. He notes that the wine’s age has resulted in "an array of unusual aromas and flavors, including iodine and salt that compensate the sweetness (403 grams) and even the alcohol (18%)." He further elaborates on its complex bouquet, mentioning "notes of dry herbs and spices, cigar ash, carob beans, incense and noble woods."
The palate, according to Gutierrez, is "very, very sweet and concentrated, unctuous, dense, with a chewy texture," suggesting that even a small sip is rich and fulfilling, akin to "having a piece of cake." While he acknowledges that it may not reach the "complexity and depth of the 1946," he still deems it "truly terrific."
This wine, bottled in June 2015 with a total of 9,650 bottles produced, exemplifies the extraordinary potential of aged Pedro Ximenez wines. Its combination of deep, layered flavors and rich, sweet texture makes it a remarkable and noteworthy addition to any wine collection.
