Decanter, October 2024

Like the 1990, the mature 1983 Talbot leads with a browning edge and similar subtle balsamic notes. Dark fruits mingle effortlessly with the cedar, coffee, and leathery nuances of maturity. Still fresh at 40+ years, the...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 1994

Like most of the Cordier 1983s Talbot is an unqualified success. The big nose of woodsy herbal and cassis-like fruit leaps from the glass. Jammy and full-bodied with some viscosity and thick chewy port-like flavors this...

Wine Spectator, October 1994

Sexy almost decadent featuring rich tobacco chocolate and wet earth aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and very silky with a long rich finish. Drinkable now.--The Bordeaux 50. -JS

The grand vin of Talbot is harvested by hand, with vinification in a combination of cone-shaped wooden vats and stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for 14 months in 50 to 60 percent new barrels originating from eight different coopers. Renowned enologists Jacques Boissenot, Julien Lavenu and Stéphane Derenoncourt consult on the winemaking and blending.

Château Talbot 1983 is the grand vin of this Fourth Growth (Quatrième Cru Classé) Saint‑Julien, produced by the long-established Cordier family. It’s a classic Left Bank blend and, in this vintage, is reported as including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, coming in at 13% alcohol. In the context of 1983—a Bordeaux year where a “large crop” and, in many places, dilution challenged quality—Talbot stands out as a notably successful result.

Critical reviews are consistently strong, with several excellent scores. Decanter awarded 93 points (Feb. 2023) and emphasized how immediately pleasurable the mature wine is, noting “incredible instant gratification on pulling the cork,” with “smokey, leather, pencil shavings” leaping from the glass. They describe a palate that is “fully evolved” with “tannins…perfectly integrated,” adding that it offers “instant pleasure with no need to decant,” while also advising a drinker’s approach: “not opening too far in advance and don’t let it hang around.”

Wine Spectator scored it 90 points (Oct. 1994), calling it “sexy, almost decadent,” built around “rich tobacco, chocolate and wet earth aromas and flavors,” and praising its “very silky” texture and “long, rich finish.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also rated it 90 (Aug. 1994), describing “a big nose of woodsy herbal and cassis-like fruit,” followed by a “jammy and full-bodied” palate with “thick chewy port-like flavors,” yet importantly framing it as “full throttle yet soft [and] supple.”

Taken together, the picture is of a fully mature Saint‑Julien that still delivers depth and richness, with integrated structure and immediate drinkability—an especially strong showing for the vintage.
