Vinous, July 2024

The 1988 Lafite-Rothschild is the best of the triumvirate that ended the decade. Another bottle vindicates that view. It shows an intense bouquet with graphite-tinged black fruit mixed with cedar aromatics that seem to...

Served from magnum, tasting delicous right now. I've had this vintage a few times recently and it is not the most blockbuster Lafite, but has such an effortless charm that it feels absolutey signature. Tobacco, rose...

I always loved the 1988 and this is a pretty bottle with finesse and wonderful length, showing the uniqueness of Lafite. Medium body, ultra-fine tannins and a refined and polished finish. The subtle currant, tobacco and...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, February 2024

Proving leopards can change their spots to some extent, while still on the firm side, some of its previous austere character has abated. Now, you find a charming, though firm, strict, medium-bodied, crisp, chewy wine with...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 1994

Tasted 7 Times Since Bottling With Consistent Notes Broodingly backward and in need of considerable bottle age the 1988 is a classic expression of Lafite. This deeply-colored wine exhibits the tell-tale Lafite bouquet of...

Wine Spectator, November 2009

Beautiful and subtle on the nose with mineral berry licorice and dark chocolate. Full-bodied with supersilky tannins and a pretty balance of fruit and mint. Long and caressing. Real claret here. Everyone talks about 1989...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, October 2002

Quite deep purple. Inky. Very Cabernet nose. Smooth and more than a hint of Lafite's trademark dancing elegance. Gentle start and quite a dry finish, but very, very respectable and true to the vintage. Quite long. 17.5/20

This famous First Growth is often described as perfumed, elegant and delicate, and one of the finest wines in Bordeaux. According to Baron Eric de Rothschild, Chateau Lafite has a beautiful, generous, and kindly soul that turns bare earth into heaven. The blend for this grand vin varies from vintage to vintage, but is typically 80-95% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5-20% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
