Decanter, October 2024

Unsurprisingly given the stature of the vintage, the 1990 Talbot was stunning. A garnet slightly brown tinged rim indicates its age. Rich, certainly, yet refined, it conveys the understated power and elegance of St-Julien...

The grand vin of Talbot is harvested by hand, with vinification in a combination of cone-shaped wooden vats and stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for 14 months in 50 to 60 percent new barrels originating from eight different coopers. Renowned enologists Jacques Boissenot, Julien Lavenu and Stéphane Derenoncourt consult on the winemaking and blending.

Château Talbot 1990 is a Saint-Julien Fourth Growth (4ème Grand Cru Classé) from Bordeaux, produced as the estate’s Grand Vin. For the vintage, reported composition is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot, bottled at 12.70% alcohol. It was aged about 15 months in barrel, with roughly 50% new oak. The growing season was notably warm, and harvest at Talbot began on September 14 and finished before heavy rains arrived on October 2.

In the glass today, the wine is firmly in its mature phase. Notes across tastings lean classic Médoc rather than overtly fruity, with descriptions of “coffee, smoky, meaty, leather, earthy, and tobacco” character and a color shifting toward brick at the rim. The palate profile is typically described as plush and resolved, with “firm, silky tannins” and moderate freshness.

Professional reviews show the wine’s strengths in balance and texture more than sheer intensity. Wine Spectator’s James Suckling called it a “Pretty wine” and an “Elegant Talbot,” noting “dark ruby color with mineral berry and wet soil,” plus a “long fresh finish” (Wine Spectator). That same review highlights structure—“medium-bodied with firm tannins”—and positioned it for further cellaring at the time: “Best after 2003” (Wine Spectator). The publication also reported production at “25,000 cases made” (Wine Spectator).

Broader critical coverage places it solidly in the upper tier for a mature classed-growth claret, with stronger scores including 92 from Wine Spectator and 91 from Antonio Galloni (Vinous). Robert Parker Jr., at 88 points, characterized it as “low-acid” and “plush,” emphasizing approachability over concentration.

Overall, Talbot 1990 offers a straightforward, fully evolved Saint-Julien: polished tannins, tertiary complexity, and an emphasis on elegance—supported by several excellent professional reviews.
