Decanter, December 2018

In terms of weather in this vintage, bud-break came on 25 March after a cold start to the year, followed by a mixed May then a heatwave in June that saw good flowering. July was cool and wet for the first half, hot and...

Wine Spectator, March 2007

Lots of blackberry, licorice and light tar aromas. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long finish. This needs time.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2008.

Vinous, October 2019

The 1996 Talbot comes from an era when I think this Saint-Julien lost its way a little. It was picked from 16 September until 12 October with intermittent breaks to avoid showers. It has a relatively light bouquet with...

Château Talbot 1996 is a mature Saint-Julien red from Bordeaux that presents the appellation’s classic, Cabernet-led profile with the firm structure typical of the year. Decanter reports the finished blend as **67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot**, bottled at **12.8% alcohol**, with a sizable production of **about 335,000 bottles**. Fruit was **hand-harvested and sorted**, then **vinified in oak vats** and **matured 18 months in barriques (50% new oak)**, according to Decanter.

In the glass, the wine is repeatedly framed as archetypal Saint‑Julien: Decanter highlights a “**St‑Julien signature of rich black fruits**,” along with “**complexity**” and “**elegance**,” finishing with “**a mouth‑watering finish**.” That assessment—paired with Decanter’s **excellent 93-point score**—positions the 1996 Talbot as a strong performer in a vintage widely regarded as successful for the Médoc. Decanter also notes 1996 as a “**very good vintage for the Médoc**,” a year whose late-season weather helped Cabernet Sauvignon in particular.

Winedoctor’s note is similarly affirmative, calling the wine “**hugely impressive**” and “**classically poised, pure and imposing**,” and emphasizing the architecture: “**fine fresh acidity**” and “**ripe, sinewy tannins**” (Winedoctor), awarded **17.5/20**, another clearly strong professional verdict.

As with many mid-1990s Bordeaux now in full maturity, bottle variation can exist; Winedoctor has noted that the estate had **Brettanomyces issues in 1996**, a reminder to buy from good provenance. At its best, though, the critical consensus describes a balanced, traditional Talbot: black-fruited, structured, and still driven by freshness rather than weight.
