Wine Enthusiast, November 2006

This is a wine that thrives on tension between its structure opulence elegance and poise. It is certainly ripe and opulent but it is so well balanced and layered with acidity and flavors of almonds orange peel and kiwi...

Wine & Spirits, December 2006

This young wine has a potent mousse and equally brisk acidity. Its flavors are bright white, from chalk to fresh cream; they take some time to meld with the vibrant structure, coming together with air, lithe and refined...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, November 2014

(18/20) Pale gold. Fruit smells much riper than on the Dom Ruinart 98. Toasty with a hint of char, almost a little reductive, ginger too. Rich and toasty on impact then filled in the middle with a really bright citrus...

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy, February 2023

A bit of a bruiser when this was released, 1998 has retained its breadth as it has aged and is still a champagne more about power than complexity. A good but not great Dom Perignon and far better as a “P2” edition.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2025

A stronger vintage than expected, the 1998 Dom Perignon exhibits aromas and flavors of lemon oil, orange rind, and brioche in a medium-bodied, zesty, rich, moderately intense style. It is far superior to either the 1993...

Wine Spectator, November 2006

Exuding honey, vanilla and light coffee notes, this creamy Champagne straddles youth and maturity. Well-balanced, fine and vibrant. The coffee and vanilla notes will develop with age. Drink now through 2015. –BS

Possibly the world’s most recognized and iconic Champagne, Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon is always a vintage-dated wine comprised of the classic varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Elegant and graceful with excellent aging potential, it is produced only in those harvest years that the Chef de Cave declares to be of exceptional quality.

Dom. Pierre Perignon, revered as the spiritual “Father of Champagne”, was a 17th century Benedictine Monk and cellar master at Benedictine Abbey of Hautvillers. He had a singular mission: to create the best wine in the world. To that mission, he dedicated 47 years of his life to invent and perfect the techniques to create a wine whose reputation knows no equal. His life-long work acquired a reputation for excellence which spread rapidly throughout the region, including the favor of the Royal Court during the reign of King Louis XIV.

Today, Richard Geoffroy, Chef de Cave and Creator of Dom Perignon Vintages, perpetuates the spirit of Dom. Pierre Perignon. The wine is produced by Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the largest luxury brand group in the world.

The 1998 Moet Chandon Dom Perignon is a well-regarded Champagne blend from France's premier Champagne region. With a notable alcohol content of 12.5%, this wine is sealed with a classic cork closure and presents itself in a distinguished white-golden color.

This vintage has received acclaim for its balance and complexity. According to Wine Enthusiast, the wine "thrives on tension between its structure, opulence, elegance, and poise," with layers of "almonds, orange peel, and kiwi fruits." Awarded a high score of 95, the review underscores the wine's potential for aging.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate offers an even higher praise, awarding it a 97. Stephan Reinhardt describes the wine as having "grey bread, almond cake, and iodine flavors," complemented by "lemon and orange aromas." The review highlights its "highly elegant, finesse-full and silky textured palate," and a "very distinguished finish" that is "dry and mineral," indicating that it remains youthful and promises enjoyment for many years to come.

Wine & Spirits also commends the vintage, scoring it 94, noting its "potent mousse and equally brisk acidity." The flavors are described as "bright white, from chalk to fresh cream," with richness that develops into "scents of brioche," ideal for pairing with a "fat Belon oyster."

Wine Spectator gives the wine a score of 91, commenting on its "honey, vanilla, and light coffee notes," which create a creamy Champagne that balances youth and maturity. The review suggests that the wine's character will develop with age, particularly the coffee and vanilla notes.

Jancis Robinson scores it at 93, describing the wine as "pale gold," with riper fruit notes compared to other vintages. The review mentions a "toasty" impact with "bright citrus freshness," and a "dense and full of energy" profile.

Overall, the 1998 Moet Chandon Dom Perignon is celebrated for its elegance, complexity, and potential for aging, making it a noteworthy choice for Champagne enthusiasts.
