Decanter, May 2021

Richly scented like you wouldn't believe; earthy truffle, black olive and rosemary fill the glass and don’t let up right through the palate, providing waves of first aroma then flavour. The vintage plays to all of Petrus’...

jamessuckling.com, June 2016

The 1998 Petrus goes from strength to strength as it ages. It's a perfect wine and the wine of the vintage with Le Pin and Cheval Blanc. I was lucky enough to drink some over the weekend when a friend brought a bottle to...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2023

The greatest wine produced at this estate since the formidable duo of 1989 and 1990 is the 1998 Pétrus, a magical bottle that is a lot more complex and expressive today than was the case only a handful of years ago...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, September 2023

It is out of my price range, but if you have the coin or friends with the bank, if you are seeking a Petrus with some age that is really hitting all the right notes, 1998 is the wine to buy. The wine is loaded from start...

Wine Spectator, January 2009

Green olives and blackberry jam with hints of vanilla and Indian spices. Some dark chocolate too. Complex nose. Very full-bodied with dense dark fruits and a licorice undertone yet the huge tannin structure is polished...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, May 2008

98+ Juxtaposing the aromatics of the Petrus against L’Eglise-Clinet, although the former does not quite have the depth of fruit intensity, it has just slightly greater delineation. It just builds gloriously in the glass...

Fermentation for Petrus is carried out gently, without any over extraction, in temperature controlled concrete tanks. The blend, typically pure Merlot, is defined in December and the wine is aged 18+ months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

Petrus displays an intense color, a rich and complex nose and an opulent fruit. In great vintages, the wine can easily be kept 25 years or more.

The 1998 Petrus Bordeaux Blend from the renowned Pomerol region is widely heralded as one of the finest wines of its vintage. This red wine, with an alcohol content of 13.5%, is sealed with a cork closure and produced by the esteemed Petrus estate in Bordeaux, France. The 1998 Petrus has garnered exceptional praise from multiple wine critics, highlighting its complex character and remarkable aging potential.

William Kelley from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate describes it as "the greatest wine produced at this estate since the formidable duo of 1989 and 1990," awarding it a perfect score of 100. Kelley notes its "aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings, violets, licorice, and black truffle," emphasizing its "full-bodied, rich, and seamless" nature with "beautifully refined tannins."

James Suckling also awards the wine a score of 100, calling it "a perfect wine and the wine of the vintage with Le Pin and Cheval Blanc." He praises its "aromas of wet earth, mushrooms, and dark fruits," and highlights its "full body, firm tannins and bright acidity." Suckling recommends decanting for two or three hours before serving for optimal enjoyment.

Decanter echoes the accolades with another perfect score, describing the wine as "richly scented" with "earthy truffle, black olive, and rosemary." The review highlights the vintage as a "classic Merlot year," resulting in velvety tannins and abundant fruit flavors. Notably, the vintage yielded only 2,400 cases of 12.

Other reviews remain equally laudatory, with Wine Spectator and Jeff Leve from The Wine Cellar Insider both awarding scores of 99. Wine Spectator's tasting notes reference "green olives and blackberry jam with hints of vanilla and Indian spices," while Jeff Leve describes it as "bottled decadence" with a "flamboyant nature."

Overall, the 1998 Petrus is celebrated for its depth, complexity, and precision, making it a standout wine with a promising future.
