janeanson.com, September 2025

Steadfast ruby red in colour, and this is exceptional, really is showing beautifully, with plenty of dark well-teased-out berry fruits, great balance and freshness, cigar, tobacco, crayon, graphite, cassis, all wrapped up...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, September 2021

2 decades of age has been kind to this wine, adding weight, complexity, and richness. Now you find a medium-bodied, soft, fresh, energetic, earthy wine filled with sweet, red fruits and dried floral notes. Elegant...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2016

The 2000 Brane-Cantenac is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 55% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. It has a really wonderful bouquet that is coming into its own: potent with black truffle and gravel infusing the red berry...

The Wine Independent, May 2022

The 2000 Brane-Cantenac is composed of 55% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, it sashays out of the glass with flamboyant scents of stewed black plums, boysenberry...

jamessuckling.com, July 2013

Very rich aromas of ripe strawberries, spices and flowers follow through to a full body with velvety tannins and an outstanding structure. It’s always a little austere. But so much there. Just coming around now. Delicious.

Vinous, September 2025

The 2000 Brane-Cantenac represents the only vintage that eschewed any vin de presse due to a meticulous selection. This has a gorgeous bouquet that blossoms in the glass: a mélange of red and black fruit vie for attention...

Wine Spectator, December 2015

Rather open, with a briary backdrop to the core of juicy plum, blackberry and black currant confiture notes. There are fresh anise and lilac flavors too, with the finish showing a cedary echo while staying supple in feel...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, March 2010

(17/20) Mid ruby. Lots of solid development even if not an ethereal heart-stopping moment on the nose. Neat and well balanced and perhaps at its peak already. Fresh fruit and a bit of lusciousness. Certainly no hint of...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2003

A solid chunky structure is the hallmark of this big wine. The fruit is black full of dark tannins. Perhaps it lacks subtlety but that is replaced with great power and potential.

Château Brane-Cantenac 2000 is a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé from Margaux, made in the first full vintage after the estate’s 1999 cellar modernization that enabled more parcel-by-parcel precision. Several reviewers also highlight an unusually strict selection: Vinous notes it was “the only vintage that eschewed any vin de presse,” while Jane Anson reports it was “the only Brane ever produced without any press wine, because it was already so concentrated.”

The blend is consistently reported as Merlot-led for this year: Neal Martin in *Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate* cites “42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 55% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc,” a breakdown echoed by Jeff Leve (*The Wine Cellar Insider*) and *The Wine Independent*. Anson adds technical details—“3.81ph,” harvest “September 25 to October 8,” and “46hl/h yield”—and frames the growing season as a cool start followed by a strong finish, with “cool July, sunny August and September.”

In the glass, the wine is firmly in mature Margaux territory: Martin (*Wine Advocate*, 93) calls the bouquet “potent with black truffle and gravel infusing the red berry fruit,” with a “saline tang” and “impressive length… and genuine complexity,” concluding it is “almost aristocratic.” Vinous (92) likewise finds “a gorgeous bouquet that blossoms,” “finely sculpted tannins,” and says it is “classic in style and approaching its peak.”

Anson’s 96-point review is an excellent standout, calling it “exceptional… showing beautifully,” with “great balance and freshness,” “cigar, tobacco, crayon, graphite, cassis,” and “silky tannins” matched to “the understated charm and drinkability of old school Bordeaux.” Other notes align: *Wine Spectator* (91) describes it as “rather open,” with “juicy plum, blackberry and black currant confiture,” “fresh anise and lilac,” and a “cedary echo while staying supple.” James Suckling (92) emphasizes “velvety tannins and an outstanding structure,” while noting it is “always a little austere,” though “delicious.”
