jamessuckling.com, January 2023

This is showing aromas of graphite, bitter chocolate, paprika and dried herbs. Turns to iodine, iron and chocolate. It’s firm and polished, with compact tannins. Shows focus and tension. Everything in the right place...

jebdunnuck.com, February 2018

The 2000 La Conseillante is brilliant (this was tasted from magnum) and while mature, is still youthful and vibrant. Deep ruby/purple colored and loaded with notions of currants, plums, chocolate, Asian spice, and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2010

La Conseillante made an excellent wine in 2001 another great one in 2005 and the estate hit home runs in both 2008 and above all in 2009. In fact the latter vintage may well end up being the modern-day reference point for...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, December 2018

Still holding on to its last gasp of youth here, this might be a slightly more masculine Pomerol. The soaring aromatics are in play here. Full bodied, concentrated and with depth of flavor, the wine offers a structured...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, May 2011

Tasted at the La Conseillante vertical at Chez Bruce. The millennial La Conseillante sports an almost Burgundian bouquet with bilberry, iodine, black olive and blackberry dominating that beautifully defined aromatics that...

Wine Spectator, January 2016

Pretty, with a perfumy hint to the range of bergamot, blood orange, kirsch and damson plum fruit flavors, which are backed by a graceful, floral-edged finish. Very silky and suave, this expands steadily and dramatically...

Decanter, December 2017

The colour tells you so much here - it's clearly rich and concentrated, with younger and more complex layers of cassis and blueberry fruit compared to the the 1999. A tannic backbone is in evidence, and this is still...

Château La Conseillante 2000 is a Pomerol red built on a Merlot-led blend—reported as 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec—aged 18–20 months in small oak casks (90% new) and bottled unfiltered. Those choices point to a wine aiming for depth and polish, and the best reviews suggest it has delivered both while keeping its own signature.

Several critics place it among the vintage’s standouts. Jeb Dunnuck gives an excellent 97 points, calling it “brilliant,” with “full-bodied richness, fine tannin, and a silky, elegant, yet concentrated style,” adding it can be enjoyed “over the coming two decades or more” (tasted from magnum). James Suckling also awards 97, emphasizing structure and precision: “firm and polished, with compact tannins,” and “focus and tension… Still so young. Drink or hold.”

At 95 points, Wine Spectator highlights a more aromatic, filigreed expression than many 2000 Pomerols, noting “a perfumy hint” across “bergamot, blood orange, kirsch and damson plum,” and a “graceful, floral-edged finish.” Spectator’s summary is telling: “Very silky and suave,” it “forgoes power for a lacy seduction,” yet “seems likely to last” (drink now through 2028). The magazine also reports production at 5,000 cases.

Neal Martin (95 points) similarly leans into nuance, describing an “almost Burgundian bouquet” of “bilberry, iodine, black olive and blackberry,” while flagging a firmer profile: “robust tannins… more masculine, uncompromising,” with a finish he expects to fill out as it “softens and melts with age.”

Decanter (94) finds it “rich and concentrated” but “relatively closed up,” recommending air—“perhaps even an hour or so in a carafe”—to let the nose “evolve very beautifully.” Jeff Leve (95) agrees it still carries structure, calling it “full bodied, concentrated,” with “a lot of tannin for a Pomerol of this age” (also from magnum).
