Decanter, September 2021

From magnum, a youthful colour, reflecting slow evolution. Aromas of cedar, lead pencil, roasted and primary fruit. Fine grained, noticeable tannin. Excellent balance of power and smooth texture. Noé Tesseron described it...

jamessuckling.com, October 2016

Extremely rich and decadent with leaf, meat and spice aromas. Ripe fruit too. Lots of toasted wood. Full and mature now. Lovely to drink now. Gorgeous.

Vinous, May 2003

Deep red-ruby. Explosive nose combines raspberry, roasted currant, grilled nuts and exotic spices. Rich, sexy, silky and full in the mouth, with expressive flavors of black raspberry, game, smoke and truffle. Finishes...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, July 2016

Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical, the 2000 Château Pontet-Canet is perhaps where things start getting interesting, as Alfred Tesseron's top-to-toe reconfiguration of the vineyard and vinification began to impact and...

Wine Spectator, January 2016

A lovely lead-in of singed cedar and vanilla notes gives way to slightly taut, racy red and black currant fruit flavors that drive nicely through an iron-edged finish. Rather sleek and tightly focused, relying more on...

Chateau Pontet-Canet is a Fifth Growth Bordeaux wine estate owned by the Tesseron family (of Cognac fame) since 1975. The estate is a rarity in the Medoc, having known only three owners over a course of three centuries.

The vineyard spans 81 hectares in Pauillac, atop an outcropping of Garonne gravel over limestone. After a first trial in 2004, which took place on 14 hectares, Pontet-Canet fully converted the estate to biodynamic agriculture. They obtained organic certification from Ecocert, biodynamic certification from Biodyvin in 2010, and from Demeter in 2014.

Alfred Tesseron uses horses to plow the vineyards of Pontet Canet since they are gentler and lighter than tractors. Because the horses never step in the same place twice, the soils are always aerated in different parts, bringing much needed oxygen to the soil.

The vines have an average age of 40 to 45 years. Their varietal plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and three parcels of Petit Verdot (2%).

Chateau Pontet-Canet is bright and brilliant with full-bodied fruit, yet finesse, in the mouth. It expresses energy, tension and intensity.

The fruit is fermented with native yeast in semi-conical concrete tanks that facilitate punch-downs. The wine then macerates for an additional four weeks before being removed from the pomace for maturation. One-third of the wine is aged in large, concrete amphorae, designed expressly for Pontet-Canet. The rest ages in French oak barrels.

Introducing the 2000 Pontet-Canet, a Bordeaux Blend from the renowned Pauillac region in Bordeaux, France. This exquisite red wine embodies the elegance and complexity that is expected from a wine of this caliber.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep, garnet color that hints at its maturity and concentration. The aromas that waft from the glass are simply captivating. Notes of blackberry, black truffle, and hints of black cherries intertwine with nuances of cedar, sandalwood, and roasted spices. This aromatic symphony is a testament to the careful vineyard management and vinification techniques employed by the producer, Pontet-Canet.

On the palate, the 2000 Pontet-Canet continues to impress. It showcases a medium-bodied profile that beautifully balances red and black fruit flavors. The wine's texture is smooth and refined, with a subtle grip that adds depth and structure. As you savor each sip, the flavors evolve and unfold, revealing layers of complexity and nuance. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a lasting impression of finesse and sophistication.

Renowned wine critics have also recognized the exceptional qualities of this wine. Wine Enthusiast awarded it a respectable score of 90, praising its modern style, generous new wood, and super-ripe fruit flavors. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it an impressive score of 92, noting its intensity, red and black fruit profile, and subtle yet insistent grip on the finish. Wine Spectator also awarded it a score of 92, describing it as sleek and tightly focused, with a reliance on minerality rather than power. Meanwhile, James Suckling awarded it a lofty score of 94, commending its richness, decadence, and mature character.

The 2000 Pontet-Canet is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but its potential for further development is evident. With its solid tannins that are softening at a slower pace, it is recommended to cellar this wine for another 3-4 years, allowing it to fully express its true potential.

In conclusion, the 2000 Pontet-Canet is a remarkable Bordeaux Blend that exemplifies the excellence and craftsmanship of this esteemed producer. It is a wine that encapsulates the essence of Pauillac, offering a harmonious blend of fruit, structure, and complexity. Whether you choose to enjoy it now or cellar it for further aging, the 2000 Pontet-Canet is sure to elevate any occasion and leave a lasting impression on all who have the pleasure of experiencing it.
