Decanter,

Sir Winston is looking particularly dignified and refined in 2004, with a surprisingly primary, youthful air, yet all the understated poise that one can expect of this classic cuvée. A cascade of impeccably refined...

Wine Enthusiast, December 2015

Following on from the great 2002 vintage of this wine, the 2004 is equally memorable. It is a magnificent wine, structured and beautifully balanced between the ripe white fruits and the tight texture that will allow it to...

View From The Cellar, September 2016

The 2004 Pol Roger “Cuvée Winston Churchill” is an outstanding young wine. It is a blend of old vine chardonnay and pinot noir, as Pol Roger stipulates that they will only use fruit for this bottling from grand cru...

Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvee in homage to Sir Winston Churchill, mindful of the qualities that he sought in his champagne : robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity. The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet with the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated.

Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth and robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime, Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is only made in the very best vintages and is always released later than the other vintage-dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill's appreciation for older wines.

The 2004 Pol Roger Winston Churchill is a distinguished Champagne Blend from the renowned Champagne region of France. This vintage, produced by Pol Roger, boasts an alcohol content of 12.5% and is sealed with a cork.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this wine a score of 94, with William Kelley describing it as "charming" and "beautifully balanced," highlighting its aromas of "golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, freshly baked bread, iodine, spices, and candied peel." Kelley noted its "pillowy mousse, lively acids, and a long, saline, delicately caramel-inflected finish," acknowledging that while it may not match the 2002 vintage, it stands as an "excellent Churchill in its own right."

Wine Spectator also rated this wine 94, praising its "creamy version" with "subtle richness" and "elegant frame." The review mentions layers of "crème de cassis, toast, and pastry cream," along with "citrus peel, smoky mineral, and spice accents" that add to its long finish. The wine is recommended for consumption from now through 2027.

Wine Enthusiast gave this wine an impressive 97 points, declaring it "equally memorable" as the 2002 vintage. The review speaks to its "magnificent" structure and balance between "ripe white fruits and tight texture," suggesting it has great aging potential. The wine is still considered young at 11 years but is drinkable now and expected to age well until 2024 and beyond.

John Gilman from View From The Cellar rated the wine 96, calling it "an outstanding young wine." He highlighted its blend of old vine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from grand cru vineyards, aged eleven years sur latte with a dosage of eight grams per liter. Gilman described a "deep and complex constellation" of flavors and noted its "impeccable balance" for long-term aging, recommending it be enjoyed between 2016 and 2040.

James Suckling awarded this vintage 95 points, emphasizing its "trademark richness, power, and complexity" with aromas of "spiced grilled hazelnuts and brown-mushroom" alongside "lemon, grapefruit, and dried-red fruits." The palate is described as having a "full, pastry-like texture" with "bold flavors" and a "fleshy cherry and peach core."

Finally, Decanter gave the wine an outstanding 98, noting its "dignified and refined" character with a "youthful air." The review highlights its "impeccably refined acidity" and "river of minerality," describing the palate as "rich, broad, and weighty" with a "majestic style" that is "biscuitty and powerful." The wine is accessible now but expected to improve with more bottle age.

In summary, the 2004 Pol Roger Winston Churchill is a highly acclaimed Champagne Blend that combines elegance, complexity, and aging potential, making it a remarkable choice for connoisseurs and collectors alike.
