Bordeaux’s Chateau Troplong-Mondot is a large wine estate on the Right Bank of the Gironde River overlooking the village of Saint Emilion. Its 33-hectare vineyard is planted traditionally with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The chateau dates back to 1745 and Troplong-Mondot was originally part of one sizeable domaine which included the vineyards of Chateau Pavie. The current estate was established in 1850 when Raymond-Theodore Troplong acquired Mondot, expanded the vineyard, and promoted its reputation. Following a trend of that period, his heir Edouard Troplong later added Mondot to his name and Troplong-Mondot was born.

The property passed into the hands of the Valette family at the beginning of the 20th century, with Christine Valette taking up management of the property in 1980. Since then, things quickly changed for the better. The quality of the wines improved and Chateau Troplong-Mondot became known as one of the top wines of the Right Bank.

Christine Valette has since passed away and today, the estate is managed by Xavier Pariente who has been involved with the estate since 2002. In 2006, it was awarded the Premier Grand Cru Classe B in the Saint Emilion classification.

Chateau Troplong-Mondot is grown on extensive vineyards rich in limestone and clay soils. Powerful and well-structured with pronounced complex tannins, its deep aromas of truffles and blackberries develop over time.

The grapes are hand-harvested, totally destemmed, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, moving to oak barrels for secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine is matured in oak barrels (75% new oak and 25% one-year old) for 12 to 24 months depending on the vintage. The average production of the grand vin is between 60,000 to 90,000 bottles.

The 2005 Troplong-Mondot is a Bordeaux Blend wine from the Saint Emilion sub-region of Bordeaux, France. This wine exudes elegance and complexity, making it a standout among its peers. With a deep, ruby-red color, it is visually captivating and sets the stage for the sensory journey that awaits.

On the nose, the 2005 Troplong-Mondot reveals a symphony of aromas. Notes of coffee, ripe fruit, wild mushroom, and blackberry intertwine, creating a captivating bouquet that is both enticing and alluring. As the wine unfolds, it reveals a dark and very complex character that continues to evolve with each sip.

Full-bodied and chewy, yet velvety and beautiful, this wine coats the palate with its intense flavors. Blackberry, chocolate, and tobacco take center stage, intertwining seamlessly and leaving a lasting impression. The finish is very, very long, showcasing the wine's layered and gorgeous nature.

Wine Spectator awarded the 2005 Troplong-Mondot an impressive score of 96 points, noting its exceptional qualities. According to their tasting note, this wine is best enjoyed after 2016, allowing it to fully express its potential. With only 6,250 cases made, this wine is a true gem that deserves to be savored and cherished.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate bestowed a perfect score of 100 points upon this wine, recognizing its greatness. The tasting note pays tribute to the late Christine Valette, who crafted this compelling wine while battling against an insidious disease. The review describes the 2005 Troplong-Mondot as dense purple, with a multi-layered and spectacularly pure profile. It is a tour de force that will continue to evolve and age gracefully for 20 or more years.

Jeff Leve, from TheWineCellarInsider.com, awarded this wine 96 points, stating that it is close to its peak drinking window. The tasting note highlights the wine's concentration, ripeness, and opulence, with flavors of wet earth, smoke, licorice, dark chocolate, figs, and black cherries. It is a hedonistic treat that culminates in a luxurious blend of dark cherries, espresso, smoke, blueberry, and plum liqueur.

Jane Anson, from janeanson.com, also had the pleasure of tasting the 2005 Troplong-Mondot. She describes it as a generous, broad-shouldered wine filled with nuances of fennel, rosemary, sage, white pepper, white truffle, grilled sandalwood, and cedar. The oak influence is present but well-integrated, adding complexity to the wine. Anson recommends giving this wine a few more years of aging before indulging in its splendor.

Overall, the 2005 Troplong-Mondot is a wine that embodies the essence of Bordeaux. With its exceptional reviews and accolades, it is clear that this wine is a true masterpiece. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, it promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for any wine enthusiast.
