Decanter, September 2022

Vega Sicilia note that this vintage, like 2006, needed an additional two years ageing in bottle to present itself at its best. On the nose it promises power, on the palate there a layers of redcurrants and cherry compote...

View From The Cellar, March 2017

(96+) The new release of 2005 Vega Sicilia Único is an absolutely stunning wine in the making, with great depth, precision and vibrancy that augurs very well for its positive evolution in bottle. The bouquet is very pure...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2023

2005 was a powerful year, and the wine was kept for longer in bottle and released two years later, after 2007 and 2008, which were more challenging years that produced more delicate wines. On those bases, by the time the...

Wine & Spirits, June 2017

The N-122 runs like a spine across Ribera del Duero from east to west, separating the Vega Sicilia winery from the Unico vineyards across the road. Those vineyards face north, on undulating slopes rich in chalk, and give...

Earthy, spicy plum and berry aromas here suggest full ripeness. Tight, scratchy tannins lend the otherwise soft and ripe palate some grip. Lightly oaked flavors of tobacco, dried cherry and raspberry grow more chocolaty...

Wine Spectator, June 2017

This polished red offers flavors of tobacco, cedar and leather, with a core of cherry and tea. Firm tannins support the thick, smooth texture, while lively acidity keeps this balanced. Harmonious and long. Drink now...

Unico is Vega Sicilia’s flagship wine, made from varying proportions of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each provides a differentiating factor that makes the wine great in every vintage.

Unico remains true to a clear and well-defined style, with an inimitable character, elegance, and strength. It has a unique and timeless quality that has elevated it among the aristocracy of the great classic wines. Infinitely complex, the wine is silky and elegant, with an aging capacity that only a handful of wines in the world can claim.

The 2005 Vega Sicilia Único, a proprietary blend primarily composed of 94% Tempranillo and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, hails from the Ribera del Duero region in Castilla y Leon, Spain. Known for its robust profile, this wine reflects the powerful vintage of 2005, characterized by its significant tannic structure and depth.

Luis Gutiérrez of *Robert Parker's Wine Advocate* awarded this wine a score of 96, noting its concentrated and powerful nature. "The wine is indeed big, powerful, concentrated and quite tannic, but it's also very good," he remarked. He also mentioned that despite its strength, it lacks the finesse of the 2004 vintage.

*Wine Spectator* rated the wine at 95 points, emphasizing its polished nature and balanced complexity. T.M. highlighted the wine’s flavors of tobacco, cedar, and leather with a core of cherry and tea, describing it as "firm tannins support the thick, smooth texture, while lively acidity keeps this balanced."

John Gilman from *View From The Cellar* also gave a score of 96, praising the wine's depth, precision, and vibrancy. He described the wine's bouquet as "very pure and still quite primary," with a nascent complexity that includes black cherries, black plums, and smoky, gently spicy new oak. He recommends cellaring the wine for at least a decade to allow it to evolve fully.

James Suckling gave the wine 95 points, complimenting its balanced and creamy texture. He noted flavors of blackberries, dried leaves, and hazelnuts, concluding that it is "medium-to full-bodied with lightly grainy tannins."

*Wine Enthusiast* also rated it at 95 points, with the reviewer describing earthy, spicy plum and berry aromas. The palate is noted for its lightly oaked flavors of tobacco, dried cherry, and raspberry, evolving into more chocolaty and raisiny notes on the finish.

Finally, *Decanter* rated the wine at 94 points, describing it as remarkably approachable despite its age. The review highlighted aromas of truffle and forest floor, a bright palate of red berries, and a fine, mineral finish. The wine’s 12 years of aging have resulted in smooth and supple tannins, making it enjoyable now.

Overall, the 2005 Vega Sicilia Único is a robust and complex wine with significant aging potential, praised for its depth, balance, and powerful character.
