Jean-Michel Cazes has left an indelible mark on his hometown of Bages, a village within Pauillac where his family’s vineyard was once the most prominent feature. It’s now surrounded by a three-star Michelin restaurant, Cordeillan-Bages, and a thriving village square, where there was once, not so long ago, a ruin. Through sheer force of will and brilliance, he has raised Lynch-Bages effectively from fifth to second-growth status, earning his family a place at the table among some pretty spiffy neighbors. Even in a challenging vintage, his wine buzzes with energy, this 2008 layered with floral fruit, scents of forest mushrooms and mineral tannins, all playing off each other and adding up to an expansive, savory elegance. This still has several years of development ahead.
