jamessuckling.com, August 2015

This is the wine of the vintage with dark berry, chocolate, spice and mushroom character. Full body, silky and beautiful tannins and a long, long finish. A beautiful wine. Drink or hold.

Riserva Madonna del Piano, hails from one of the first and best single-vineyard sites in Montalcino, with production dating back to 1977. Made only in the best vintages and from the oldest vines on the property, in 1994 Valdicava was granted the right to list the Madonna del Piano vineyard designation on the label. The 19.5 hectare single vineyard is divided into four parts: old vines, Pievecchina, Pratea and Sferracavallo. Owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese harvests the vines from each part of the vineyard at different times and makes the wines separately before blending them together. The wine is then aged about two years in large old casks and another two years in bottle.
