The 2010 Gouges Vaucrains is going to be a dynamite wine in the fullness of time, but at age five, this is still very much a puppy. The youthfully reticent nose delivers scents of cherries, pomegranate, venison, nutskin, a beautifully complex base of soil, woodsmoke and a dollop of fresh herbs in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very soil-driven in personality, with outstanding mid-palate depth, suave, ripe tannins, great focus and grip and a very, very long, nascently complex and ho, so promising finish. All this great wine requires is time in the cellar.

Dense and a bit reduced with a slight youthful rusticity to the flavors of currant and chocolate. Plenty of volume and depth though. Finishes broad fruity chewy and quite long with substantial ripe tannins.

Again there is too much reduction present to evaluate the nose properly. The usual impressive concentration of this wine is definitely present though as this is a big robust and sleekly muscular wine that possess terrific structural element ripeness and culminates in an explosive and palate saturating finish. This very firm but well-balanced effort should age effortlessly for years to come and require at least 15 to arrive at is full majority. ♥ - Comments: Sweet spot Outstanding

The 2010 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains has a wonderful bouquet with blackberry, briary, wet limestone and light floral scents that unfold on the nose and gain superb intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit on the entry. There are touches of blood orange infused into the red fruit with brittle taut tannins toward the sustained finish. This is so fresh, so vivacious, that it will be difficult to resist opening, but it will mature gracefully over the next two decades. - Neal Martin
