(96+ points) The 2010 Ducru-Beaucaillou, picked 29 September to 14 October, was matured in 100% new oak for 18 months. This is more backward, sultry compared to the 2009, but there is a payload of black fruit laced with...

Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named after the beautiful large stones that characterize its unique Saint-Julien terroir. Unusual for Bordeaux, it is one of the only castles to be built directly above the barrel cellars and one of the few estates producing a ‘Grand Cru Classe’ still inhabited by its owners. The Borie family has owned this estate and has lived here for over sixty years, in the sumptuous aromas of their wine.

Rated a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Ducru sits on an exceptional site with incomparable views over the Gironde estuary. Its 75-hectare vineyard is planted 70% to Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% to Merlot with an average vine age of 35 years.

Today, the estate is managed by the company Jean Eugene Borie SA, which is owned by Mrs. Borie, her daughter Sabine Coiffe and her son Bruno-Eugene.

Ducru-Beaucaillou is a fine, elegant, and delicious wine with a long finish - in short, an archetypal Saint-Julien. The grapes are hand-picked, and the sorting process takes place on mobile tables in the vineyard to keep the healthy grapes separate from substandard ones. Fermentation is by traditional techniques and only the best fruit is used to produce the wine.

The 2010 Ducru Beaucaillou is a Bordeaux blend from the St Julien region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine has a deep, garnet color that is visually striking and enticing. The nose is filled with intense aromas of blackberry, briary, and tobacco, showcasing the expressive nature of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape with a touch of Pauillac mint that develops with aeration.

On the palate, this medium-bodied wine reveals crisp acidity and a lovely focus, displaying the craftsmanship and elegance characteristic of a beautifully crafted Saint Julien. The wine is well-structured, with lush and well-integrated tannins that provide tremendous length and grip. It showcases a complex flavor profile dominated by dark purple fruits, complemented by notes of wild herbs and a touch of spice. The bright acidity, a result of a cooler but sunny growing season, adds liveliness to the wine, resulting in a harmonious and balanced experience.

The 2010 Ducru Beaucaillou has received high praise from numerous wine experts. Neal Martin's Wine Journal gave it a score of 97, highlighting its classic bouquet, intense flavors, and style. James Suckling awarded it a perfect score of 100, describing it as a phenomenal wine with perfect aromas of Cabernet Sauvignon and a texture like the finest cashmere. Wine Spectator also scored it 97, praising its flamboyant and aromatic profile, as well as its graphite-supported finish.

This wine is built for the long haul, with great aging potential. It is recommended to be enjoyed between 2020 and 2040, allowing it to fully develop and reach its drinking window. The 2010 Ducru Beaucaillou is a grand wine, generous and powerful, yet still displaying balance and freshness. It is a must-have for any Bordeaux lover, showcasing the best of what St Julien has to offer.
