A linear, taut version, somewhat austere in profile, with racy acidity driving the black cherry, black currant and violet flavors. Intense and persistent, it's long and more mineral than the '11 at this stage.—Non-blind...

This shows plums and currants with blackberries. Full body with soft tannins and a fruity finish. Very fruity and delicious. Made from 100% organically grown Sangiovese grape. Better in 2015.

Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese from a selection of the best vineyards in the Colli Toscania Centrale IGT region. At the modern, gravity-fed winery, the juice ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts for at least 3 weeks. The wine ages in Troncais and Allier (French) oak barrels for 24 months.

The 2010 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve is a Sangiovese wine from Tuscany, Italy. This vintage has garnered significant acclaim from multiple professional reviewers, reflecting its quality and character.

Wine Spectator awarded this wine a score of 96, describing it as a “linear, taut version, somewhat austere in profile, with racy acidity driving the black cherry, black currant and violet flavors.” They noted its intensity and persistence, along with a more mineral quality compared to the 2011 vintage, suggesting it will be best enjoyed between 2017 and 2033.

James Suckling also praised the 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve, giving it a score of 94. He highlighted its “plums and currants with blackberries” and emphasized its full body with soft tannins and a fruity finish. He noted that the wine is “very fruity and delicious,” and is made from 100% organically grown Sangiovese grapes, recommending it be enjoyed from 2015 onwards.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, represented by Monica Larner, also rated the wine highly with a score of 96. She described it as a “rock solid wine that sits firm and begins to peel slowly, each delicate layer at a time.” The tasting notes included dark fruit, smoke, spice, tar, licorice, and delicate blue flowers. Larner compared this vintage to 2006 but found 2010 slightly more approachable overall. She noted that the wine has evolved over the years, maintaining its solid core but showing signs of relaxation and unwinding. She also mentioned beautifully polished notes of Mediterranean herb and dried mint on the long, glossy finish.

Decanter provided a score of 95 and detailed the challenging weather conditions during the growing season, which ultimately contributed to the wine’s character. They described it as “the most darkly-fruited and brooding, with a smouldering, smoky vanilla edge,” and noted its intensity and power, suggesting it needs more time to lighten up.

In summary, the 2010 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve is a highly regarded Sangiovese with complex flavors and a solid structure, praised by multiple reviewers for its intensity, fruitiness, and evolution over time.
