Decanter, April 2024

Flowers, leather, sweet spice and vanilla. Lively and focused, detailed and nuanced – in high definition. Gorgeous blackcurrant and black cherry elements. Fruity, but the balance is equally split between freshness and...

Loads of tension and form. It can be cellared for decades, but it’s balanced and beautiful already. Lots of blueberry, licorice and blackberry character. Try in 2018.

Beautiful structure, sleek, powerful and finessed. A little subdued right now and needs another three to four years to fully open. Gunsmoke, campfire and grilled sandalwood arrive after a good half hour in the glass, and...

The Wine Independent, July 2024

The 2010 Lagrange, 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, is deep garnet in color. It opens with pronounced notes of fruitcake, stewed black plums, and dried blackberries plus suggestions of smoked meats, fried herbs, and...

Fresh, crisp, bright, and chewy, the red fruits offer purity, refinement, and lift, with energy, and length. Still youthful, its best days are in the future. So, hands off for a few years. Drink from 2025-2050.

Wine Enthusiast, February 2013

With vineyards in the west of Saint-Julien, Lagrange produces wines that are polished and elegant. In 2010, that style has been suffused with tannins while also delivering a black currant flavor. The wine is rich and...

View From The Cellar, March 2011

(92+) I did not have time to drop by Château Lagrange to taste the 2010 sur place, so I do not have a note this year on their fine second wine, Les Fiefs de Lagrange, but the grand vin was showing very well at the UGC...

For the grand vin of Lagrange, grapes are hand-picked into small crates and then sorted both manually and by an optical sorting machine. Traditional Bordeaux vinification is carried out in 92 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats of varying capacities, thus allowing a separate vinification to respect the character of each plot and soil-type. Placing all or part of a given plot into its own vat also allows harvest at optimum ripeness.

Total vatting time, determined by tasting, varies from 16 to 28 days, depending on the tannic development in the fermenting wines. Temperature of fermentation never exceeds 28°C to guarantee preservation of the finesse and fruitiness. Selection of press wine is performed “barrel by barrel“ allowing a wider choice range during the blend tastings.

The wines are blended only a few months after harvest, to achieve a better harmonization of the tannins and plot origins. The wines are aged 20 months in French oak barrels, of which 60% are new, and racked every 3 months.

The 2010 Lagrange St Julien is a Bordeaux blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, produced in the renowned Bordeaux region of France. This wine exhibits a classic deep garnet hue and features a cork closure with an alcohol content of 13.5%.

The wine has garnered considerable praise from wine critics for its excellent structure and aging potential. James Suckling awarded it an impressive score of 96, highlighting its "loads of tension and form," and noting its balance and beauty even at a young age. He suggests that it can be cellared for decades, though it is already enjoyable for its "blueberry, licorice and blackberry character."

JJ Buckley also lauded the 2010 vintage, giving it a score of 95 and noting significant technical upgrades at Lagrange, such as the use of optical sorters and smaller fermentation tanks. These advancements have contributed to a wine with "plentiful tannins" and a "tremendously long" finish. Buckley describes it as "among the top releases ever from this estate."

Other reviews echo the wine's finesse and elegance. Decanter describes it as "full of joy and finesse and elegance," emphasizing its combination of "black fruits and smoke" with a slate minerality. The Wine Independent's Lisa Perrotti-Brown commends its "pronounced notes of fruitcake, stewed black plums, and dried blackberries" with a finish that is "long and minerally."

Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast both rate the wine at 92 and 93 respectively, with the former appreciating its "sleek and racy" finish and the latter praising its balance of tannins and rich fruit flavors.

Overall, the 2010 Lagrange St Julien is a wine of remarkable quality, showcasing the vineyard's advancements and offering a promising future for those who choose to cellar it.
