The tannins here have more of a physical presence in your mouth than with Comtesse, as is so often the case with these neighbours. Beautifully constructed, this is poised to open up but remains extremely closed right now. It ripples with power and layers of black fruit, truffles, olives and smoked earth, totally wonderful and another hit for Pauillac in this brilliant vintage. You can set this back down in your cellar and feel utterly confident that it will deliver for decades to come.

This is quintessential Pauillac, a great wine with its Cabernet proudly at the fore. It ranks with the 2009 and, with its tannins, is sure to age longer than that vintage. Solidly structured, powerful and dense, with fruit promised for the future, it succeeds with its weight and great concentration.

79% cabernet sauvignon 21% merlot. 13.7% alcohol. 73 hectare estate (planted to 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot) on gravel soil. The wine is aged in 80% new French oak barrels. Fresh aromas of lilac cassis and violets along with a good dose of cedar and a touch of graphite. Still quite primary at this point it will need time to fully integrate the fruit tannin and oak components. However it is full bodied with gorgeous texture. Looks to be a very successful vintage for Pichon Baron. This wine should be held for at least 10 years and last through 2035.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Pichon-Longueville Baron delivers expressive scents of baked black cherries, plum preserves and crème de cassis with hints of cedar chest and bouquet garni. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm backbone of grainy tannins and lovely freshness with bags of energetic black fruits and a long, wonderfully pure finish.- LPB

Solidly built, with a roasted edge to the steeped fig, blackberry and black currant flavors, quickly followed by brambly tannins and notes of bay leaf and espresso. Stays dark and tarry through the finish, with superb drive and verve. Best from 2017 through 2030. – JM

94+ Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Pichon Barton 2010 has a very linear, very focused bouquet with blackberry, cedar and mineral notes, not as intense as other wines but showing great clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, very fine acidity, a gentle grip with very composed, lightly spiced finish. This is a relatively understated wine within its group, sophisticated and classy. It has closed down a little since I last tasted it, hence the slightly lower score, but expect that to rise in the future. Tasted January 2014.
