jamessuckling.com, May 2017

Aromas of cherries and currants with hints of fresh rose petals. Full-bodied, very fruit-forward and flavorful. Long and rich. All about fruit and richness. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast, August 2015

Aromas of baked dark-skinned fruit, cedar, cooking spice and a balsamic note unfold in the glass. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc, the firmly structured palate delivers ripe black...

Wine Spectator, July 2015

A rich, bright red, displaying plum, blackberry, boysenberry, leather and spice notes, allied to a dense structure. Built for the long haul, this remains balanced and juicy through the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon...

Decanter, February 2018

Very youthful with ripe cassis, smoke, coffee and anise, the 2011 Solaia is laden with sweet dense fruit that just stops short of being top heavy. Admirably polished and silky tannins give this wine the balance it needs...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2014

I’m not fully convinced by the 2011 Solaia. It is a hedonistic and heady expression for sure, but it doesn’t come near the 97 points I awarded the 2010 vintage. In fact, the bouquet here is very ripe with thick tones of...

Solaia is a 50 acre (20 hectare), southwest-exposed vineyard of the Tignanello estate situated between 1150 and 1320 feet (350-400 meters) above sea level on stony soils consisting of calcareous clays and limestone rock. The Marchesi Antinori produced this wine for the first time in the 1978 vintage with a blend consisting of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, repeating the initial production in 1979. In the following vintages, 20% Sangiovese became part of the blend and adjustments to the ratio of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were made until the current composition of the blend was defined. Solaia is produced only in top vintages and was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, or 1992.

The 2011 Antinori Solaia IGT is a proprietary blend hailing from the renowned Tuscany region of Italy. This red wine is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc, offering a robust and complex profile. With an alcohol content of 14.5%, it is bottled with a traditional cork closure.

James Suckling, a notable wine critic, awarded this vintage a score of 94, describing it as "full-bodied, very fruit-forward and flavorful" with "aromas of cherries and currants" and "hints of fresh rose petals." He emphasized its long, rich finish and suggested it is suitable for drinking now or holding for future enjoyment (jamessuckling.com, 5/5/2017).

Wine Spectator also gave the 2011 Solaia a score of 94, praising its rich and bright qualities. Their review highlighted notes of "plum, blackberry, boysenberry, leather, and spice," and commended its dense structure and balance. They recommend this wine is best from 2018 through 2033 (Wine Spectator, 7/31/2015).

Wine Enthusiast’s review, which also scored the wine at 94, noted the wine's "aromas of baked dark-skinned fruit, cedar, cooking spice and a balsamic note." They described the palate as delivering "ripe black currants, dried black cherries, clove, mint, tobacco, and anise," supported by fine-grained tannins. They advised allowing time for the wine to fully develop and suggested a drinking window from 2017 to 2023 (Wine Enthusiast, 8/1/2015).

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate offered a slightly more reserved score of 91, with Monica Larner commenting on the wine's hedonistic and heady expression. She noted "very ripe" tones of "strawberry and blackberry" with "tobacco, leather, and sweet spice." Larner acknowledged the wine's "good amount of tannic firmness" but felt it did not match the excellence of the 2010 vintage (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 10/1/2014).

Decanter provided a score of 93, highlighting the wine's youthful and ripe character. They noted "ripe cassis, smoke, coffee, and anise" with "admirably polished and silky tannins." However, they did mention that some warming alcohol does come through on the finish (Decanter, 2/14/2018).

Overall, the 2011 Antinori Solaia IGT is a well-regarded wine with strong fruit-forward characteristics and a complex flavor profile, praised across the board by professional reviewers.
