47% cabernet sauvignon 47% merlot 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. The 250 hectare estate is planted in deep gravel with an average vine age of 25 years. Aged 18 months in 50% new oak. Notes of blackberry and Santa Rosa plum dominate the nose which also shows aromas of eucalyptus clove mocha and vanilla. Medium-bodied on the palate the tannins are broad and mouth-filling. There is a high level of acidity present but also enough fruit to balance it and allow for a long lingering finish. Give it 5-8 years to come together and enjoy through 2030. Tasted twice.

Attractive fine tannins, this has savoury blue and red fruits, redcurrant and bilberry dominant, alongside mandarin peel freshness giving an attractive lift through the palate, plenty of St Julien signature if subdued right now - this is a vintage that will continue to deliver elegance over the long-term but is not about power. A dry growing season, relatively cool in summer but with little rainfall, meaning an early year with harvest September 14 to 20, 60% new oak for ageing.

The 2011 Beychevelle is similar to the bottle six months ago with quite a floral, Margaux-like bouquet, cedar and a touch of camphor, bilberry and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. There is good weight and freshness here, well-balanced with that dash of white pepper on the finish (though less of the truffle than last time.) Still, this is worth your attention. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property. -- Neal Martin

A medium-bodied pleasant lighter style of St.-Julien the 2011 Beychevelle reveals a dark plum/ruby color in addition to notes of strawberries black cherries new saddle leather and hints of herbs and earth. Refreshing and delicate it should drink well for 10-15 years.
