, April 2012

48% merlot 37% cabernet sauvignon and 15% petit verdot. Chateau Palmer's second wine. Vines are grown on stony gravel soils with a planting density of 10000 vines per hectare. Aged for up to 17 months in oak with 25-40%...

jamessuckling.com, February 2014

This is classy for the vintage, with beautifully crafted tannins and focused, pure fruit. Currants and blackberries. Full body, fine tannins and a long, long finish. Second wine of Palmer. Best second wine of the vintage?...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, April 2012

(NM90-92 points) The assemblage is 48% Merlot 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and for the second time 16% Petit Verdot since it was very aromatic. The 2011 has a precocious bouquet that has forgotten that this is supposed to be...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2014

This rich and perfumed wine has a significant proportion of Petit Verdot in the blend, giving great color and ripeness. The wine is soft and fruity with black currant flavors and a light tannic structure. Drink from 2017.

Wine Spectator, January 2014

Shows good energy, with a lively, pebbly streak forming the spine, holding the red and black currant, lilac and iron notes together for now. Should unwind with cellaring, as the acidity is finely beaded and the fruit...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2014

The draconian selection process has resulted in a delicious second wine, the 2011 Alter Ego de Palmer. It boasts plenty of plum, black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with hints of vanillin and earth...

Alter Ego is a different, nuanced expression of the Chateau Palmer terroir. Born with the 1998 vintage, Alter Ego resulted from a new approach to selecting and blending, intended to interpret the Chateau Palmer terroir differently without departing from the values that make the reputation of the estate’s wines – namely, finesse and elegance, aromatic richness, harmony and length.

Made in roughly the same volume as Chateau Palmer, Alter Ego spends less time in oak, just 16 to 18 months, and only 25% to 40% of the wood is new.

Offering intense, crispy and juicy fruits, Alter Ego is a spontaneous uninhibited wine, soft and round as soon as it has finished barrel aging. Its lush aromas and supple tannins make it a wine that can be appreciated in the first years after bottling.
