Full-bodied, the tannins are still ripe with a firm layer of present oak that sways with a delightful hint of herbaceous character that pairs beautifully with the generous and juicy nature of the wine. Succulent acidity and fine-grained tannins linger on the elongated finish as flavors of bitter black tea and blackberry skin persist with a youthful gleam. This is Doubleback’s first vintage to include estate-grown grapes in the blend. Truffle, mocha and ripe purple-fruit scents explode from the glass. Ample acidity underscores the chewy tannins. A dense and ageworthy wine, this needs more bottle-age to show its best; try after 2018.

A big wine, from the first pour this possesses broad shoulders (like those of the former NFL pro who owns the brand, Drew Bledsoe). With a little air the wine becomes more high-toned and composed, the fruit relaxes, grounded by a mild earth note. The combination is like black plum tea, with a finely textured thread of cocoa-scented tannins that keeps the wine on point. A generous red for roast beef and herbed potatoes.
